CPUs for 5100/E510/5150, please post ur mainboard models

  • Need those of you that have a upgrade CPU on 5100/E510/5150 take one minute to post your mainboard models and your cpu to help clarify the limitation of CPUs on those models.

I have done quite a few searchings and readings here. There were already more than 20 of such posts dusscusing this issue. It is not supprising because Dell has been selling 5100/5150 for more than one year so far and it was the best selling dimensions for quite a while.

However, based on my reading so far, Dell purposely made this kind of upgrade difficult for us.
Both 5150, E510/5100 (actually including 9100 and 9150) share very same chipset (Intel 945G) and pretty much identical hardware set up but the upgrade avalibilities vary a lot depending not only on the Bios versions(lastest for 5100 is A03 and for 5150/E510 is A06) also on the types of mainboard.

Some reported flawless running of up to 950 duo-core PentiumD, some others found "un-recognize CPU" error but still able to use their PD 945, and left some others totally none-bootable box with any 9xx CPU series.

I though the only way to figure out this mystery is to gather the infos about the mainboard and supported CPUS, this will greatly help those people like me who really need a cpu upgrade on their 5100/5150/E510.

After all, returnning a CPU will cost 15 percent restocking fee in most stores and if you failed for the second time, total cost becomes 30%, not counting the other cost like shipping fees.

Therefore, if you have a 5100/5150/E510 and running any upgrade CPU, please take 1 min use Cpuz 1.37
    (home page: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

to check and kindly post your CPU, bios and most importantly the mainboard models here to help us get better idea of compatiable CPUs

good idea 4 thread... now at least i know A03 added support for Cedar Mill (631, 641).

I would love to know if anyone has tried dual-core with 0J8885 board & A03 BIOS.
  • All right, today my power supply dead when I just passed warranty for 3 days,
and Dell CSR insists that is my mainboard dead and want to sell me a new one

I went to local store and get a new one, and a new CPU!

now I am running on 945D at 3.4G

everything is fine except there is uncompatiable processor, please strike F1 to continue message everytime bootup

My bios is A03 and mainboard type (please see my first post)

I am done with this post, thanks everyone that replied
  • No reason why this thread should stop. It could provide a lot of information to others out there so I hope others who have these systems continue to post their info as requested in the original post.

I have searched all Forums and Threads for anybody who has successfully upgraded their CPU to a Core 2 Duo with a Motherboard like mine.
Although alot have said its just not possible for various reasons I have not come across anybody who has tried to do this.
I would love to upgrade so if anybody has any info or details on this. Please Post.
  • FYI.

    Just upgraded from Pentium D 820 to a Pentium D 945 3.40GHz

The CPU did NOT work with the A05 BOIS, flashed with the A07 and bingo it works!
  • Dimension E510

    BIOS: A07
    Processor: Pentium D 930

Has anyone tried to upgrade processor to a Core 2 Duo on this board???
  • superjack, Others have posted this is not possible because the core 2 duo requires a voltage regulator that is not present on these boards. :smileysad:
  • So will a Pentium D, say a 945, run on Motherboard model 0WG261?

    Thanks.

Will updating my Bios to the latest A07 allow me to upgrade from my current Prescott 90nm P4 650 CPU to a Cedar Mill 65nm P4 or Pentium D945 or D950?
