Inspiron 5100 max memory 2GB (I think not!!)

  • My 5100 is rated at 1GB max RAM.

The Intel 845PE chipset it uses is rated at 2GB max. This seems to be confirmed by SiSoft Sandra which reports 2GB max.

I am assuming that the Dell BIOS limits the RAM to 1GB for some reason (e.g. power supply issues)??????? Or would 2GB actually work?

    Cheers
    Giles
  • 2G will work.
  • OK you don;'t have to answer but why then do Dell say the limit is 1GB? As do Crucial etc. (who probably get their info from Dell!)

The world just gets more confusing every day........................
  • They probably never updated their documentation, on the thought that no one would think to equip a budget systems like a 51xx with that much RAM.
  • Budget??!! It wasn't that cheap !!!

The reason for so much RAM is to enable use of a MIDI pipe-organ simulation (Hauptwerk) which has samples of every pipe as recorded from various organs ... Sample sets can be a tad large ...

But if it really is thrown together that might explain why I have problems connecting it to audio equipment even via USB soundcard ... when mains is connected it mucks up the grounding somehow so that there is noise (basically some sort of a signal I think - is sounds like faint buzzing) going down the "ground" wire ... a DI box with earth lift seems to help ... maybe I should post in an another forum ...

Crucial is a supplier to Dell and has certain restrictions on what they can and cannot post on their site re: Dell machines and specs.  Specifically, if Dell has a product strategy to limit a machine to a specific amount of memory so that if you want more you buy the next computer, Crucial cannot go and tell you that it can use more memory.  That's the situation here.

If however, the info is a typo (i.e. 4300 using 512 when it takes 1gb), you'll see it reflected that way on Crucial's site.

In the future, you should start a new post.

Yes, you can add a 512.  Crucial ships to Chile' also from the U.S. site.

  • they do the same thing for the inspiron 1000 which they claim will only take 512 ram.   were 1gb sticks of pc2100 out when the 5100 was first released?

  • How would I find out? I bought mine in March 2003.

The 5100/5150 owner's manual says the the 5150 can take up to 2GB RAM but that it's two SODIMM slots can take up to 512MB each. Work that one out!

I need as much RAM as poss so I'll just buy a 1GB and if it don't work I'll flog it

  • as far as I know the actual manual says that the max for the 5100 is 1gb (512 per slot) and the max for the 5150 is 2gb (1gb per slot).   i may be mistaken on that though

as noted above though, the 5100 can apparently take 2gb

  • yeah ... i think they just omitted that the 5150 slots can take more ...  oh well

Like two sticks from Crucial that are guaranteed to work.
