U2410 - Heavy Grain issue when watching movies or playing PS3 connected via HDMI

So I received my 2410 last week.

I have the Pink/Green tint issue but obviously they are all affected by this. Then the horizontal issue where the monitor is not horizontally fit (right side is lower by a few milimeters).

Now I’m wondering about a grain problem and wanted to know if it’s a common issue. I connected my PS3 to my U2410 via the HDMI port and I’m experiencing HEAVY grain while playing games or watching blueray movies. It is configured as 1080p with the Game preset (but actually tried every possible setups). The weird thing is that the PS3 dashboard looks sharp (maybe because it's static images and not moving?).

Same thing when watching DVD from my Macbook Pro (connected via DVI). Image is very pixelated.

I am attaching a few pics taken to illustrate the problem (and no the grain is not due to the ISO of my camera in case you are about to ask duh). Notice how the image is very grainy and pixelated, making it almost unbearable to watch movies or to play games. Uncharted 2 (that looked so great on my previous monitor) is unplayable as it is way too pixelated.

(I also went through all PS3 settings and tested about everything to make sure I didn’t miss anything).

I just switched from a LG W2453V (TN panel, returned after a few days) where everything was extremely crisp/sharp and delicious to look at while gaming or watching movies. I purchased this U2410 since I am a graphic designer and require a much better viewing angle and colors calibration flexibity so the LG couldn’t deliver at all.

I’d like to have your opinions on the issue.

Is the grain/pixel issue similar on your monitor?

Thank you very much.

We are testing a new firmware now. No ETA on when this will go live. Once live, it will take some to rev up the monitors in the hubs.

DELL-Chris M:

I'm sorry but I'm not sure I understand. Will I be able to update the firmware myself by downloading it? Will this improve the grain issue?

Thanks.

Yes, the flash will correct the graininess in sRGB and Adobe Modes. You cannot flash it yourself. We will flash them in the hubs. When done, you will have Dell Order Support issue an exchange to get the repaired monitor.

The grain does not affect only the sRGB and Adobe modes. It is also present is all other ones, including the Game preset I use for the PS3.

Basically, it's as if everything was displayed in a high level ISO of 3200 from a cheap point and shoot camera.

Then get an exchange now and see if it is better.

Can I contact you directly for an exchange or do I have to get through the phone customer support? I tried calling this morning and gave up after 15 minutes waiting at the office. Thanks.

No, This grain is not the same issue as that in sRGB and AdobeRGB modes. That grain because of dithering,Your grain come from Over-sharpening.if you do sharpening for a picture 10 times in photoshop, then you can get a picture looked same as your samples.I tested it on my U2410 and I find maybe there is a bug in the firmware on YPbPr Color mode that make DSP do the sharpening function twice. I think you set OSD->Menu->Display Settings->Sharpness to 0 maybe solve or alleviate it.

The sharpness is set to 50, the default value. Turning it down to 0 makes the whole image blurry and the grain is still very present. Thanks for the advice though.

So does Bluerays look clean on your monitor? via a PS3? Computer?

I just got my first replacement and the grain issue is exactly the same.

I connected my Computer and my U2410 via HDMI port.If I set the output pixel format of  my ATI Graphics Card to "RGB",Then I can get a great screen, sharp and clean; If I set the output pixel format to "YPbPr",then I get a grain  screen same as your samples.

Re: U2410 - Heavy Grain issue when watching movies or playing PS3 connected via HDMI

Tried to switch between Automatic/RGB/YPbPr mode on my PS3 and forcing it to RGB does seem to alleviate the problem slightly. Unfortunately it's still miles away from being acceptable.

If anyone have a PS3 connected to this U2410, please post your experience with Blu-ray playback. Thanks!
