Re: XPS 730x General Hardware Discussion thread

Am I correct, according to the spec's for the XPS730x max ram is 6GB in 3 slots but the new studio range can have max 12GB in 6 slots?

billybigfoot,

Yes, but the Studio XPS does not come with the DDR3-1800MHZ CM3X1024-1800C8D/DELL memory. The Studio XPS only sells with -
DDR3-1333MHz PC3-10600 at 1.50V VDIMM (1GB and 2GB sticks)
DDR3-1066MHz PC3-8500 at 1.50V VDIMM (1GB and 2GB sticks)

Re: XPS 730x General Hardware Discussion thread

So what ram does the 730x actually come with? When checking the ram option when building it only gives DDR3 1066mhz. The 730x FAQ says 6GB DDR3 1333MHz Corsair PC3-10700A 667MHz. You say DDR3 1800mhz. Which ram exactly does the 730x come with or takes?

Re: XPS 730x General Hardware Discussion thread

djkilla,

What does it come with today or what can the PC use? That is two different questions.

It currently sells with -
3GB or 6GB Tri-Channel DDR3 at 1066MHZ PC3-8500

It can use -
Tri-channel DDR3 at 1066MHz PC3-8500
Tri-channel DDR3 at 1333MHz PC3-10600
Tri-channel DDR3 Corsair Dominator CM3X1024-1800C8D/DELL at 1800MHz PC3-14400

Re: XPS 730x General Hardware Discussion thread

What is the native/default memory standard for the motherboard? I'm assuming it's the DDR3 1066mhz and to use the 1333mhz or 1800mhz you'll have to overclock the memory, correct?

* Correct.

So with the new Dell AlienFX Light program on the XPS 730x, will this be available for people with the original XPS 730?
* There are two scenarios where any XPS 630 and XPS 730 customer can use the Dell AlienFX Light OR the retail ESA software without incurring any issues -
(1) Load the Dell NVPerformance/Monitor/System Update, Dell AlienFX Light, and the Dell XPS Thermal Application and use the Dell AlienFX Light to control the colored LEDs but do not use the Dell NVPerformance to control the colored LEDs.
(2) Load the NVIDIA System Tools with ESA Support by itself and use that software to control the colored LEDs but do not load any of the Dell software, Dell AlienFX Light included.

* No and maybe.

Had a look in the Dell driver page but could not see them so where do you download it from?

Also is there is an upgrade program the we should be entitled to the extreme Core i7 for free considering the QX9770 (£1000) is worth more then the extreme version of the Core i7 (£850)

IMO, offering an option to buy the new motherboard and CPU without the case would be fair but I wouldn't expect Dell to offer the new CPU for free.  This isn't the first time new Intel chips are cheaper and more powerful than the chip it replaced and it won't be the last.  It's the nature of Moore's Law.

IMO
