AW3423DWF, ETA on EOTF firmware fix?

Hello Alienware team,

Many people are wondering what is the ETA on the firmware fix that's coming for the AW3423DWF? According to this article on dell website, a firmware update was suppose to be provided in mid February for the source tone map bug in HDR 1000. Alas, we're now March 1st and there's still no update in sight.

EOTF (Electro-Optical Transfer Function) curve in HDR1000 on the AW3423DWF is currently messed up as shown by many reviewers (Monitor Unboxed, etc.). Any update on when we should see a firmware fix for this would be most welcome.

The issue is that competing monitors with the same OLED panel like MSI's MEG 342C and even the DW Gsync version of this panel don't have the same issue with HDR 1000 EOTF.  There should be no reason this particular model couldn't be fixed, especially with upgradeable firmware.

I would argue that 400nits is sub standard for HDR.  HDR content could be mastered up to 4000 nits even though no commercial panels currently support it.  400nits is barely SDR adjacent.  I very much see the difference and value of using the 1000 nit mode for specular highlights.  Sure, the OLED panel kills for black level, but HDR is really about the lighter end of the spectrum.

Just wanted to add that this is still an issue.

With all the 'fixes' that are going around on the web with different settings, all it is doing is confusing the customers further.

I hope that a new firmware update is being worked on and Dell are not just happy that this is resolved.

I'd like to see Dell have a response to this... the DW model does not have this issue so I'm hoping it's an easy fix for them. I cannot recommend this monitor in good faith with the HDR 1000 EOTF curve the way that it is.

This is the first expensive monitor I have ever brought and it is leaving a sour taste in my mouth in the fact that, Its advertised as being able to do 1000 nits but all it does is stretch the EOTF curve from HDR400 to 1000 and makes everything bright and blown out.
I have opened a support ticket as well but its radio silence.

I bought the DWF version on November/22, but as it was taking too long to get here in Brazil, Dell has offered to exchange it for the DW one, which I took. It was marvelous while it worked, but unfortunately, it developed a bright vertical line next to the right border, so now I'll wait for the DWF I actually bought...

Well, I'm very concerned with this faulty EOTF curve on HDR1000 which I read so much about, especially having seen what a good one looks like on the DW...

Please Dell, do your part and fix this, there are a lot of us counting on it.

Any updates on this problem? Its ridiculous that 1100 euro monitor is not working properly.

I agree, this should be adressed. The YouTube channel Monitors unboxed is explaining the latest outcome of the latest Firmware Update very well. It seems all it does is is raising the Output luminance.

This is still being looked into by the team, unfortunately I do not have any further updates.

Thank you for the update BradL, that's much appreciated! It's reassuring to know that the team is still working on this.

To clarify the latest firmware update didn’t make a satisfactory improvement. Would be nice to have HDR 1000 useable without washed out colours.

Yes, this is what I was referring to. Apologize for lack of detail, for some reason I thought I had posted a bit more..

Thanks for catching this!

The Gsync variant aw3423dw when switching between HDR 400 and 1000 will completely reboot the panel (~3sec black screen). The aw3423dwf won't do this and the switch is instant.

This leads me to believe that the hardware screen scaler is the reason and this won't be fixable with a software update. Dell probably used cheaper hardware than others with the same panel.
