AW3423DWF, ETA on EOTF firmware fix?

Hello Alienware team,

Many people are wondering what is the ETA on the firmware fix that's coming for the AW3423DWF? According to this article on dell website, a firmware update was suppose to be provided in mid February for the source tone map bug in HDR 1000. Alas, we're now March 1st and there's still no update in sight.

EOTF (Electro-Optical Transfer Function) curve in HDR1000 on the AW3423DWF is currently messed up as shown by many reviewers (Monitor Unboxed, etc.). Any update on when we should see a firmware fix for this would be most welcome.

Well if its upgradable but you don't get the needed updates it's kind of pointless , this issue isn't fixed since DWF release and it's been months , that's why he probably said that and people being sceptical

There has been an update released fixing other issues, just not this one. At least there is an opportunity, as opposed to the DW version.

The DW version has had a couple of different firmware revisions since release, and if you have an issue and need the new firmware, you have no other option than to RMA the monitor and hope you get one with the new firmware.

For me the HDR 1000 EOTF is not a big deal, and I use the HDR 400 mode which does not suffer from the EOTF mode and works fine.

I agree. The extra fan on the DW and non-upgradable firmware are definitely two weak spots that kept me from getting it. However, the DW has a superior HDR experience, with highlights up to 1000 nits.

However, DW vs DWF is not the topic of this thread, and I don't want to be distracting from the main purpose. I merely pointed out the DW because it does NOT have the issue the DWF has with HDR 1000 mode. I have seen it in person, and the two monitors offer very different HDR experiences.

That being said, HDR 1000 mode is occasionally nice to brighten up HDR scenes, even if it is not accurate. Watched Blade Runner 2049 the other night, and even in a totally dark room, it was almost too dark until I switched from DisplayHDR TrueBlack to 1000.

My biggest complaint (maybe it's the same thing as ETOF) is that in switching modes, the entire screen brightens up, not just the highlights/etc. Which is not what I'd like to see, I want the darks as dark as they're supposed to be.

Otherwise great monitor, only some games don't work in HDR with console mode off, but other than that loving it. Occasionally the fan will hit 100% and sound like a turbine, and I have coil wine, but I can't win all the lotteries...

Well, I am more concerned about the random black screens than the HDR 1000 mode. That one has me concerned because if it's a hardware issue it might not be fixable.

It does work fine. When you watch a true black HDR video with tiny highlights, the HDR1000 really only shows just how much you're missing out using the true black mode. I'm in a really dark room and the true black mode is fine for now, but I paid 1k for a feature that isn't working...

Just glad to hear a potential fix is coming soon.

It happens to mine, at totally random times. There does not seem to be any specific trigger for it. That and I am already experiencing some minor burn in after 6 months of owning one.

I am hoping that by this time next year OLED has advanced to a point where the burn in is no more an issue.

I haven't had that happen yet, not randomly at least.

Only times the black screen happens on mine is when I get up my chair. Same thing was happening on my old monitor mind you so it's not DWF related. While quite strange, it's a known phenomenon. Not saying that's necessarily what is happening to you, but I'm throwing it out here in case it can help someone figure it out.

The chair related black Screens are the conclusion of electrostatic charge. This is likely because you have experienced the very same phenomenon with your old screen. Some (gaming)chairs are very subsceptable to this. Changing the chair could solve this problem. No Joke.

I'm quite disappointed that HDR1000 is still not fixed to the point of returnign the monitor. HDR400 looks decent, but I didn't buy the monitor for that and this is a high value, premium monitor. It should get somethig basic like this right.

Yes, this whole screen brightening issue IS the EOTF issue. It simply stretches the HDR400 curve to 1000 nits. This is explained by Hardware Unboxed in the following video, which I'm sure has been shared or mentioned in the thread before. https://youtu.be/vzY7q1bSrWM?t=173

This is unacceptable, because the only difference between HDR 400 and HDR 1000 SHOULD be the highlights. The rest of the image should remain the same.

In the current state, the ABL/APL kicks in much sooner in HDR 1000 mode than in HDR 400 mode, leading to the screen being dimmed when large bright areas are shown, which is exacerbated by the HDR 1000 mode's over-brightening of the entire scene.

Well, lets hope it gets fixed by the end of the month. Else, I'll have to return it and go with a competitor that actually works. I'm sure I won't be alone.

I have not heard anything about new firmware arriving, and I have been working with them on the issue of the random black screens.

In my opinion, I would just go ahead and return it, especially since return windows are limited in time and waiting until the end of the month might cause you to fall outside the return window and then you would be stuck with it.

Out of curiosity @CaptSaltee, which competitors are you considering? I do not know of any other monitor capable of HDR like this one.
