SmartByte, limits speed

If anyone has really fast internet and when you do a speed test you only get 100 Mbps, check to see if Dell has slipped the SmartByte application on to your PC. I have a 400 Mbps connection and 802.11AC wifi and my Inspiron PC would only get 100 Mbps at my ISP's official speedtest site.  i went through 3 different AC cards thinking it was them because my Ipad would always give me a speed of 400Mbps. Just by happenstance I uninstalled the SmartByte app, and lo and behold my speed now gives me 400+ Mbps. Here's the kicker, a day later the dang application was back and i was getting 100 Mbps again.  I didn't install it, it installed itself!  Every time i would uninstall it, a day later it would be back...ugh!  I do not know how to keep it from self installing so what I did was go to the "Services" tab of Windows 10's task Manager and stopped the service "SmartByte Network services"  after doing this i have my full speed back again, and the app doesn't "restart" itself.

I have a Dell Inspiron 17-7999 laptop that had SmartByte, which I uninstalled.  Doing a search on C: for SmartByte I found a .exe file hidden away.

Location: C:\ProgramData\Dell\Update\Downloads\APP\

SmartByte_K30NX_Win_1.1.511_A00.EXE

Maybe this is why SmartByte keeps getting reinstalled>

We apologize for the issue that you guys have experienced!

The most recent version of SmartByte should not have this issue, but we certainly want to know if you are seeing this problem with the current version! You can check your installed version by searching SmartByte in Windows Search, then clicking the SmartByte App. Once you have SmartByte open, press F4, and look for the version number on the bottom. The version number should be at least version 2.0.613. If it is not, try updating from Dell here - <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

If you are still experiencing problems on the current version of SmartByte, please contact us directly at killersupport@rivetnetworks.com so that we can better help you!

Dell please get rid of this. I won't buy another Dell until it's gone or fixed.

I had the latest version, and can attest that it did still have the issue of killing my bandwidth which many, many others here and elsewhere complain about.  I will not be contacting anyone about it, as the easiest and best solution is simply to uninstall - there was no discernable benefit to having your product.

To summarize my issue - I have Spectrum cable and it was working on my new Dell at about 200mb consistently until sometime this last week, when apparently Dell decided I needed a new version of Smartbyte.  Thereafter, 30mb tops.  Yesterday, I tested speed with Ookla repeatedly and got around 30mb each time.  I then uninstalled Smartbyte based on recommendations to do so and restarted the computer.  That was the *only* change I made.  Upon restarting, speed was immediately at around 220mb.  There is simply no other explanation than Smartbyte causing the problem.

If the software appears again, I'll delete it again.  And again.  And again.  And then buy a laptop from a different manufacturer without an OEM deal with a malware vendor.  I'm sure your product touts many great benefits which fail to see and frankly don't care about.  However, the reality is that it crippled my bandwidth and that of many others, whether intentionally or accidentally - either way, that is not an acceptable outcome.

My brand new Dell G3, right out of the box, could not get better than 4Mbps down on WiFi. Most of the time it was less than 1Mbps.

I uninstalled SmartByte and it now gets better than 36Mbps on the WiFi 802.11n.

Why does Dell install this junk software.  I was ready to send the laptop back to Dell  as defective.

I agree. SmartByte appears to slow down Internet speeds, because a tool I use says it is reporting on us to unknown 3rd parties. (Who?) Someone here, with greater skills than me, should investigate where its sending our info. Dont believe that the govt. spies on its citizens today? Then read about Edward Snowden on Wikipedia, first, before you comment. Educate yourself. Illegal govt. spying is worse than you think. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Snowden

Hello, I came across this matter completely by accident. While searching for a solution to the problem in Outlook 2010 and removing unnecessary applications in Windows 10, I was interested in the program from the topic. For several days, Outlook 2010 for unknown reasons have stopped sending emails (SSL encryption). The mail server was disconnecting the client, but only on this computer. Restoring the system image from before updating Dell software and drivers was an additional hint (because for a moment, Outlook was working. Until you allow Dell updates). It was the removal of this unfortunate SmartByte program that solved the problem.

Anthony - Thanks for posting the new version.  It fixed me right up.

Great! I'm glad to hear it!

If anyone updates to the latest version of SmartByte and it does not resolve the problem, we have confirmed that there is a specific, older Intel Wi-Fi driver that is somewhat buggy. Updating the Intel Wi-Fi driver from here - https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=vg6m5 - will resolve the issue if updating SmartByte does not.

Thank you so much. I stopped the service and Oulook works again!

@FaniStyl have you tried updating your Intel Wi-Fi driver and installing the latest version of SmartByte? That will usually resolve this issue, and allow you to use the SmartByte feature set, as well.

Landed here because the computer was slowing. Now we're hoping it also fixes our Filezilla issue as well!

I just checked my internet speed and it was slow compared to what it should have been, so I looked for SmartByte found it then deleted it. Then checked my internet speed again and I'm sorry to say that it's even slower, a lot slower. So now I'm thinking great I really messed up!!
