XPS 17-9700, Recording level control problems

Hello!  I would love some feedback from anyone who has or is experiencing the same problems I am while trying to record stereo audio using line-in audio sources.

Using audio recording software on two different Dell laptops is producing inconsistent results.  My desire is to record in stereo and have control of the line-in recording volume on my XPS 17-9700 using the analog line-in jack or the USB line-in port.  My older Inspiron 15R does an OK job but I want to use my newer and faster XPS 17.  The audio source is the pre-amp output of a Carver C-1 stereo preamplifier.  The XPS has Realtek/MaxxAudioPro audio drivers.  The Inspiron has Conexant SmartAudio HD drivers.

Here is the current situation with both machines:

Dell XPS 17-9700

Software used: Audacity 3.4.2 and Ashampoo Music Studio 9

USB input – software volume control does NOT work and recording is mono, i.e., left audio signal is recorded on both channels and at low level.

Line input – software volume control does NOT work but recording is stereo at low level

Software used: Ocenaudio* with WASAPI input

USB input – software does not have input volume control.  Records in mono, i.e., left audio signal is recorded on both channels and at low level.

Line input – software does not have input volume control.  Records in stereo but at low level.

Dell Inspiron 15R (5520)

Software used: Audacity 3.4.2

USB input – software volume control works. Recording is in stereo.

Line input – software volume control does NOT work but Windows 10 Start>Settings>System>Sound>Input>Line In>Device Properties>Volume setting does work, although it's awkward.  Records in stereo

Software used: Ocenaudio* with WASAPI input

USB input – software does not have input volume control.  Records in stereo.

Line input – software does not have input volume control.  Records in stereo.

Software used: LP Recorder (circa 2003)

USB input – software has input volume control.  Records in stereo.

Line input – software has input volume control.  Records in stereo.

  • Note: Ocenaudio does not feature a software input volume control.

So I'm just wondering if the XPS is incapable of adjusting the incoming line-level signal in any event.  And if not, is there any current Dell laptop that IS capable?  Or should I try a different manufacturer at this point?

Thanks for any advice and/or suggestion!

Pat

PC Sound carda are notoriously marginal (bad) for serious recording.  An external recording interface is needed for full control.  Focusrite, Presonus and MOTU are some popular brands in the recording studio world.  USB connected units range from two analog preamp inputs to eight.  Some even come with professional recording software.

Look over the many units at Sweetwater Music

@fireberd Thanks, Fireberd.  I'll take a look at Sweetwater's offerings.  I just wish my newer XPS 17 would work like my older but trusty Inspiron 15R.  So much for progress!
