On factory-installed systems, Ubuntu 9.04 can be re-installed via 3 different methods:

  • From hard drive (recommended): By using the GRUB menu at boot time.
  • By using the DVD ISO created after the system is received.
  • By using a USB key created after the system is received

CAUTION: BACKUP ALL PERSONAL DATA BEFORE YOU PERFORM THESE OPERATIONS.

Reinstalling from hard drive

This OS re-install option can be used to restore the system to its original factory settings:

1. Reboot your system. Shortly after you see the Dell logo, please ESC to invoke the GRUB menu.
2. Select "Reinstall Operating System".

You will see the following on the screen:

The user is expected to type exactly the string above (i.e. ERASE).

When the OS installation begins, the user will see the following:

When finished, the system runs the OEM Configuration Wizard to allow the user to select system language & location, time zone, keyboard layout and first user.

Recovering from a CD or USB key

These are directions for recovering from a CD or USB key created from an ISO posted to linux.dell.com or from media created by Recovery Media Creator .

Instructions:

1. Reboot the system and press F12 when you see the Dell logo as the system boots. Select to boot from the CD/DVD drive or USB key (whichever is appropriate).
2. You will get a boot menu similar to an Ubuntu disk. Select the appropriate recovery option:

* Automatic reinstallation will cause all data to be erased.
This is the closest to a factory installation.

* Interactive installation will allow you to resize the existing partition(s)
to fit the OS partition.
This is best to choose if you want to keep your previous OS as well.

4. The boot process will continue. The installer will then reconstruct itself on the hard drive before beginning. You will see the follow screen with a pulsating progress bar for approximately 10-20 minutes before it begins:

5. At this point you will be asked to remove the DVD or USB key to continue the restoration. The machine will reboot and automatically continue when you press enter.
