Optiplex USFF, DVI, Dual Monitors and Why You Can't Connect 2 VGA Monitors in Extended Desktop Mode

Dell has a great computer series with its Optiplex line of business computers. Dell offers several form factors for each model and all models share -- for the most part -- drivers and capabilities. While the larger Opties allow expansion, the smaller form factors save space. The form factor oddball in the Optiplex 745, Optiplex 755, and Optiplex 760 line-up is the Ultra-Small Form Factor or USFF machine. These petite boxes lack some features that their other form factor cousins have, but Dell takes great strides to provide nearly the same capabilities for this pint-sized computer.

Dual Monitors with USFF Optiplex Computers

The focus of this article will be video, and specifically setting up dual monitors (single desktop) on Ultra-Small Form Factor Optiplex computers. The other form factors support video cards, but USFF Opties do not - and they are given only Intel integrated graphics and a single DVI video port connector. However, Dell engineers have gone to considerable lengths to provide the ability to provide dual monitor capabilities from that single DVI port.

DVI Supports Analog and Digital Signals Over One Wire

First a little background we need to understand that DVI connector. If we take a look at Wikipedia, we learn that the Digital Visual Interface pin-out contains pins for digital connections (pins numbered 1 through 24) and separate pins (numbered c1 through c5) for analog signals.

Normally, if a video card pushes computer video through a DVI connector, it pushes the same screen to both the digital and analog portions of that DVI connector. This makes sense because the user can connect the DVI signal to a DVI monitor and the signals pass through the digital pins of the DVI port attached to the computer. And if the user has a VGA monitor an inexpensive DVI-to-VGA adapter will route the analog pins of the DVI port to their proper VGA adapter pins and a VGA monitor will display the screen via the VGA protocol. Note that in both examples, one set of pins is ignored by the monitor and inaccessible to other monitors.

Dell Magic: Two Signals from a Single DVI Port

But Dell engineers did something ingenious to allow dual monitors from a single DVI port. They created a Y-splitter cable that attaches to the DVI port on the computer, and connects the analog pins to one VGA connector and the digital pins to a separate DVI-D (more on that later) connector. When two monitors are connected, the BIOS sends different monitor signals to the analog and digital pins of the single DVI port on the back of the USFF Optiplex machine! With the Y-Splitter-Cable, the owner can connect one VGA and one DVI monitor and reap the benefits of a dual-monitor-single-desktop setup. In this respect the USFF Optiplex has dual-monitor capabilities similar to the other form factors (that rely on video cards to acommplish the same) in its family.

Why You Can't Configure Dual VGA Monitors

Now comes the fun part and the reason why I am writing this article. If you have two VGA monitors -- you can't obtain the dual-monitor-single-desktop setup. At first glance it seems completely possible. All I would need to do is get an inexpensive DVI-to-VGA adapter, attach it to the DVI portion of the Y-Splitter-Cable, and we're done. But there's a problem.

Let's look closely at that Y-Splitter-Cable connector. At one end we have a male DVI-I connector to attach to the DVI-I port on the back of the USFF Optiplex box. DVI-I connectors are "all the pins" meaning both analog and digital. At the other ends of the cable are two connectors, a female VGA, and a female DVI-D. The female DVI-D accepts only the digital pins of a DVI-D male connector. And rightly so, because as we see above, the C1-C5 analog pins at the computer have been routed over to the VGA connector; there's no analog signal left to pass along here so only the digital pins are available for connection.

All I Need is An Adapter...Right?

I had naively assumed that I could attach an inexpensive DVI-to-VGA adapter to the DVI side of the Y-Splitter-Cable and attach my second VGA monitor to the adapter. The problem is both physcially and technologically impractical.

The inexpensive DVI-to-VGA adapters are all DVI-I (both analog and digital) males to VGA (analog only) females. This makes perfect sense. Those adapters route the analog C1-C5 pins to the analog RGB portions of a VGA female adaptor. But the Y-Splitter-Cable has already routed those analog computer video signals to the other half of the Y-Splitter-Cable. There is no such thing as a DVI-D-to-VGA adapter. You might see some advertised on Ebay but don't buy them like I did. They are actually DVI-I-to-VGA adapters (despite claims and photos of sellers) and they won't physically attach to the DVI-D female side of the Y-Splitter cable. And if they did, they're trying to route non-existent analog signals from the DVI-D female pins to the VGA side of the adapter.

At the DVI side of the Y-Splitter-Cable, we only have digital pins available for connection. In order to get a VGA signal out, we would need to convert the digital signal to analog VGA signal before getting it to a female VGA connector on the other side. Conversion from digital to analog is possible, and there are products that do this -- but they are about as expensive as a new DVI-capable monitor and therefore impractical from a cost standpoint. Not only are there physical barriers but technological barriers as well.

In Summary

So there you have it. From a single DVI-I port on the back of a USFF Optiplex compter, Dell has allowed dual monitor capabilities, but only when one is VGA and the other is DVI. Trying to attach two VGA monitors is not practical.

xps420 320gb hd 4gb ram vista home premium. This problem just popped up this morning and as far as I know, I have done nothing to cause it. When I open my mail, I get the following window popup: "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive\device\harddisk3\dr3" There are no disks in the usb floppy, the dvd-rw or the dvd rom. I can get rid of this popup by clicking the cancel X in upper right corner of the window, and the mail will open properly. I also get this when opening some other things, but not all. Any ideas? I also have xp pro and windows 7 on this computer. I can access any one of the three on choices at startup, but it has been this way for weeks.

Dell XPS 420 SigmaTel driver issue

As so many people have found out: the default Dell SigmaTel drivers for the XPS 420 do not work in combination with Supreme Commander.

Many hours I spend looking for the solution and almost convinced myself of buying a seperate soundcard, with that there was a new problem that the frontpanel audio is not usable in combination with most of the soundcards.
You should find a soundcard that works with the DELL C6173 Audio Cable, which you can find on eBay or buy at Dell spare parts.

I found a blogpost from Ed Bott which solved my issue with Supreme Commander, copied content to keep it here for reference.

Update 19-May-2008: In the comments, E.P. notes that Dell today released a new Sigmatel driver package, R182475. This one is identified as v.6.10.0.5866 and once again claims to be only for OptiPlex 740 models. The dialog box lists the same models as those shown below. I’ve successfully installed it on two different Dell systems now.

By and large, Dell’s driver repository works pretty well. But on at least one score lately, it’s been failing, and I’m not sure why.

Last week, Microsoft pushed out a new IDT audio driver via Windows Update. IDT is the company that bought SigmaTel, which makes a lot of the audio chips used on motherboard-based PC sound solutions. So if you have a SigmaTel audio system, that IDT driver should have been for you.

Except it didn’t work. On the one and only system where I installed that update here, it wiped out my audio completely. And a lot of Dell customers had the same experience, based on the uproar in the Dell Community message boards.

The solution, as it turned out, was simply to install the correct driver. But finding that driver was harder than I expected. For some reason, Dell is not linking its master SigmaTel driver file to the many PC models that use this chip. For example, when I went to look for an updated audio driver for my XPS 420, I was offered driver version 6.10.0.5511, released in June 2007. But I knew better and used version 6.10.0.5515, released in February 2008. I’m sure it’s the right one, based on this installation screen that came up at the beginning of the setup process:

The driver package I was offered, using Dell’s numbering scheme, is R157052. The driver I downloaded is R173209. It is a unified 32- and 64-bit driver package and in fact, it even applies to my Inspiron 530. How do I know that? Because when I look at the advanced system details report for the Inspiron 530 I see that it is a DXP061 model, which is listed in the Dimension section of the screen above. (Follow these instructions to see what model number you have.)

This driver also allows you to install Vista Service Pack 1 on a Dell system that would otherwise be blocked by the older SigmaTel driver. So, if you have any of the following Dell models, go get the R173209 update (or the more recent R182475 driver listed in the update at the top of this post):

The Dell Optiplex 760 is a business focussed machine from Dell and as such comes with power efficient power supplies of either 305W or 255W. If you choose to run a graphics card that requires its own seperate power input then the standard power supply will not suffice.

When I discovered you open up the case you will discover that the 255W PSU in my Optiplex 760 did PSU in the Mini Tower does not have any extra connectors, I started looking around for an so to use a more power graphics card you will need to upgrade. You may find that companies will tell you that Dell make their own specific PSU which cannot be replaced, butI found there are at least a couple of companies thatwere are able to provide me with a PSU that would fit the 760.

Taking the end I chose a example of the 500W replacement which fit straight unit from PCPower, it comes in a neatly arranged box with a set of screws to connect it to the slotcase. The mains power external connector was As the Optiplex 760 case is black in parts, it comes with painted screws and I chose to reuse these to maintain the look. There are four screws and a different position but cleared "tang" that hold the case no problem PSU in place (see the Optiplex 760 technical documentation online) and these are easily undone to release the case screw placements were all identicalstandard power supply. The one issue I did find is replacement unit fit into the same place identically - bear in mind that the PSU is made to fit full tower cases and as such in effect a structural part of the cabling does not come out as neatly as case so you may find an element of flex until you tighten the 760screws.I will be revisiting

As the PSU is an upgrade, the cable management to try run lengths and make it neater. At connectors are longer and more numerous that the moment I standard PSU so you may have arranged things roughly to make sure take a little time to ensure that fans are kept clear of extra cables .

I'm very happy with the Optiplex are routed neatly and its management features provide for good airflow and that I can add nothing is trapped when you close the case.

The 500w unit provides an Nvidia GeForce 7800GT extra connector to the power on the motherboard, an upgraded Graphics card and has been running an NVidia GeForce 9800GT with 8Gb RAMno problems.I now find that I have a drive controller and psu that can supply power to many more storage devices than I can physically fit into the Mini Tower Case!

The OptiPlex in the article is limited in card selection because there are no available power connections, and the CPU cooler prohibits the long, high-end cards. The question at hand is what workstation video card can I use.

I also want to introduce an unknown Microsoft software that is too cool to keep under wraps.

First of all I would like to apologize for my lack of posting. It’s difficult enough using the computer when one is legally blind, but my vision has decreased even more over the past month or so. I have been dealing with this which has been very difficult. I did see the eye doctor and the good news is that there are no structural changes within the retina.

Now for the purpose of this post.

It’s not a secret that I am using a Mac, and I am running OS X 10.5.4. One of the best things about this operating system is it’s ability to be used by low-vision folks like me. Using a key of your choosing along with the wheel of the mouse, the entire screen zooms in to a significant size. Windows lacks this feature, instead using a very lame magnifying lens that is fixed to a small part of the screen, or re sizable to take up valuable screen real estate.

There are some programs that I still need Windows for, so I had buy a new Windows machine. I settled on a Dell Optiplex 330. So far I have been pleasantly surprised with this machine. This model comes with an Intel P35/G33/G31 (based on CPU-Z) chipset which is a budget, yet very stable chipset, and I configured it with a Wolfdale E7200 Core 2 Duo processor.

I added some personal touches, a 4GB memory kit from Crucial, a Seagate 1TB Barracuda ES.2 hard drive, a PMY FX1700 graphics card and an RME HDSP 9632 soundcard (highly recommended). The result is the best Windows machine I have ever used. Considering it’s base components being budget in nature, it generates some respectable numbers on the Windows Vista Experience Index:

The only downside to the Windows machine is the screen zoom. However, I am extremely excited to find a free program that fixes this issue. It’s called Zoomit v2.10. This program, written by Mark Russinovich, is available from Microsoft Technet Website. It’s a standalone program, meaning there is no install. It runs in the background and waits for the CTL+1 keystroke for activation. When activated, the wheel on the mouse will zoom in and out - the entire screen, just like OS X. The downside: you cannot use the mouse or type while in zoom mode. But that’s OK. I use this mostly for reading and viewing images mostly.

I chose the FX1700 because it supports OpenGL 2.1 and DirectX 10. Nearly all of the older model Quadros support OpenGL 2 and DirectX 9 - including the FX1500. Some major differences between the FX1500 and FX1700 (this is not a review, just a display of basic facts):

Looking at the bandwidth, I suspected the FX1500 would be faster, but review sites claim the FX1700 is faster because of the new GPU that is supposed to handle an incredible amount of data. I am not a graphics card expert so I cannot speak intelligently on this matter.

What I did notice is the FX1500 is much faster. Out of curiosity, I removed the FX1700 and drivers from the system and replaced it with the FX1500. In testing the Windows Energy screen saver, there is a substantial difference in the speed of the graphics display. As for the Windows Vista Experience Index:

Compare these numbers with the set below. As a result, the FX1500 remains in my system and the FX1700 will go into storage to serve as a spare part.

My Dell Dimension 4700 won't get out of safe mode and keeps saying setup can't start in safe mode. Safe Mode is in all four corners of the black screen. Along the top of the screen it states Microsoft (R) Windows XP (R) (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803.2158;Service Pack 2). I had originally put in the Resource CD, not knowing that the computer was in safe mode. I pressed F8 and entered Start Windows Normally and that didn't work. The screen says <Windows root>\system32\hal\dll is missing or corrupted. How do I resolve this issue? Is this a hard drive problem? Should I purchase a new hard drive?

Dimension 4550 owners on Dell's forums and the web in general have reported installing and operating with 2GB without problems, although not all SDRAMs are compatible. All this means the Dimension 4550 supports SDRAMs up to 1GB in each of it's two memory sockets for a total of 2GB of memory. However, according to Intel, the 1GB SDRAM must meet certain specifications.

When Dell came out with the Dimension 4550, Intel (with their 845PE chipset motherboards) was not able to TEST the Intel 845PE chipset using 1GB DDR SDRAM memory. While Intel's documentation explicitly states that it is supported, only 1GB SDRAMs with an organization of x8 are specified to work. (For SDRAMs 512MB or less, both x16 and x8 organizations will work.)

Locating compatible 1GB memory:

First, make sure your BIOS is updated to A08. The BIOS version is shown when booting. You can get the BIOS update from Dell's Support download page for the Dimension 4550.

To locate compatible 1GB SDRAM for the Dimension 4550 that meet Intel's specifications, one need only find compatible memory for Intel's D845PESV motherboard, which uses the same chipset as the Dimension 4550. Specifications for Intel's D845PESV Motherboard are: Intel 845PE chipset, 478 CPU Socket, 400/533MHz FSB, ATX form factor.

Any memory manufacturer or memory retailer will tell you what memory is compatible with Intel's D845PESV motherboard. This is easy to do with online memory configurators/locators. Simply enter your system as a desktop or motherboard, maker Intel, Intel motherboard, and model D845PESV. If your Dimension 4550 is a 533MHz FSB (Front Side Bus) use at least the PC2700 memory returned by the configurator (don't use PC2100). For 400MHz FSB use PC2100 memory (faster memory should also work). (If your CPU is 2.2GHz or less you're running a 400MHz FSB, if it's higher you're running a 533MHz FSB.)

Compatible 1GB memory:

Listed below is PC3200 1GB SDRAM memory for Dimension 4550 that should work with either 533 or 400MHz FSB. Note that PC3200 memory supports a faster clock speed than needed, but seems to be more readily available than PC2700 or PC2100 memory at about the same price.

When Dell came out with the Dimension 4550, Intel (with their 845PE chipset motherboards) was not able to TEST the Intel 845PE chipset using 1GB DDR SDRAM memory. While Intel's documentation explicitly states that it is supported. However, only 1GB SDRAMs with an organization of x8 are specified to work. (For SDRAMs 512MBand or less, both x16 and x8 organizations will work.)

Dimension 4550: Maximum memory 2GB, not 1GB

Dell's documentation for the Dimension 4550 incorrectly states that the maximum memory is 1GB. Most websites and memory configurators also state this maximum. However, this is only the maximum memory TESTED for the Intel 845PE chipset (the chipset used by the Dimension 4550) around the time it came out. According to Intel, the actual maximum memory for the chipset is 2GB. This means the Dimension 4550 supports SDRAMs up to 1GB in each of it's two memory sockets for a total of 2GB of memory. However, according to Intel, the 1GB SDRAM must meet certain specifications.

Locating compatible 1GB memory:

Any memory manufacturer or memory retailer will tell you what memory is compatible with Intel's D845PESV motherboard. This is easy to do with online memory configurators/locators. Simply enter your system as a desktop or motherboard, maker Intel, Intel motherboard, and model D845PESV. If your Dimension 4550 is a 533MHz FSB (Front Side Bus) use at least the PC2700 memory returned by the configurator (don't use PC2100). For 400MHz FSB use the PC2100 memory (faster memory should also work). (If your CPU is 2.2GHz or less you're running a 400MHz FSB, if it's higher you're running a 533MHz FSB.)

Dell's documentation for the Dimension 4550 states that the maximum memory is 1GB. However, this is only the maximum memory TESTED for the Intel 845PE chipset (the chipset used by the Dimension 4550) around the time it came out. According to Intel, the actual maximum memory for the chipset is 2GB. This means the Dimension 4550 supports SDRAMs up to 1GB in each of it's two memory sockets for a total of 2GB of memory. However, according to Intel, the 1GB SDRAM must meet certain specifications.

When Dell came out with the Dimension 4550, Intel (with their 845PE chipset motherboards) was not able to TEST the Intel 845PE chipset using 1GB DDR SDRAM memory. Intel's documentation explicity explicitly states that it is supported. However, only 1GB SDRAMs with an organization of x8 are specified to work. (For SDRAMs 512MB and less both x16 and x8 organizations will work.)

Locating compatible 1GB memory:

Any memory manufactor manufacturer or memory retailer will tell you what memory is compatible with Intel's D845PESV motherboard. This is easy to do with online memory configurators/locators. Simply enter your system as a desktop, maker Intel, Intel motherboard, and model D845PESV. If your Dimension 4550 is a 533MHz FSB use the PC2700 memory returned by the configurator. For 400MHz FSB use the PC2100 memory.

I am running a Dell 5100 Media Center, XP, 3.2GHz, 1GB.

It will not reboot...even in safe mode, sugesting that there is a software or hardware problem.

I also tried to reboot in safe mode using "last working configuration" and it did an evaluation. Said that the "volume was dirty" (C) before returning to the original blue screen.

This machine did not come new with any system restore disks.

Looking for any advice.

I have reciently reinstalled windows xp home on this computer and after the instalation checked divice manager and have gotton rid of all the yellow question marks except the one about the ethernet controller. where can i get this. I have gone through all of dell website and the web site driverdownloads.com . I know it is possible i could have missed the download along the way, but this is getting fustrating. this is my last straw.

If you an Amercian English speaking customer and you call for DELL support, who do you get?

I'm a long time Dell comuter purchaser . . . but enough is enough.

When I call for support I don't want the cheapest Indian nor South American script reader to be the DELL person I'm been holding online for more than five minutes ( plus ) to talk to who knows . . . nothing.

How do I get Dell to reply? They never reply. They will not recognise my service tag. Therefore, I cannot use online help. I emailed with my receipt details but they did not reply either. My year's gaurantee is nearly up yet they have never replied. I have two x 250 hard drives but the backup does not seem to work. Everytime I start up the PC I get a disk full notice. I also get a missed backup notice. Can anyone help

As soon as i start the computer a error message apperers, saying the" volume is dirty". it goes through 3 checking stages -it has done this before but started sucessfully after. but now it constatly runs these checks and does'nt start at all. Any advice or help?

Dimension 4700C Rebuild Problems

Trying to rebuild a Dimension 4700C on Windows XP, and have had nothing but problems.

Installed a new disk, booted off the Green Dell WinXP disk, created a partition of 30GB, then quick formatted it and installed the first set of files. At the first reboot, after the Dell logo clears, the screen goes black and no more video, ever. I can't tell if it is in the next phase of the install or not because I can't see what is happening.

I have tried 3 different Dell OS disks, same result. I tried installing a different Video card and got a little further, but now as the Windows splash screen starts to come up, the system freezes and goes no further.

A colleague suggested flashing the BIOS. Sure enough, the machine has A01 and A07 is available. Only problem is, it appears to be installable ONLY from within Windows. There are cursory notes suggesting you can create a floppy for a "non-Windows" system. Only problem is, the machine does not have a floppy drive. So I created a bootable CD from a Windows boot floppy, and included the A07.exe file that I downloaded. When I boot from that CD, it comes up to an A: prompt, and if I DIR the contents, the A07.exe file does not show up at all. If I list the contents of the CD in Windows, A07.exe is there; if I list it from "DOS", the file is not there. Tells me that this file is not really executable in DOS. (Whatever happened to the good ole' days when every Dell BIOS section had separate downloads for flashing from within Windows or flashing from a bootable disk, and they gave you the entire bootable files for creating a flash floppy?)

As you can see, I am getting tagged out at every base. I have NEVER met a machine I couldn't figure out how to rebuild until this one. I am a week late in delivering this one and am still stuck on page 2. ANY suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated.

Inspiron 530s, Vista OS.After I create a desktop shortcut to a certain folder (right click folder, send to:) why would it not appear after a reboot? Why should it be necessary to recreate the shortcut each time I boot up?

Is there another way to create a more permanent shortcut?

I just bought a quad processor Studio smmt117-b. 64bit Vista O/S. When the system hybernates I need to hard boot to get it back. I understand there are drivers to fix this. Can someone direct me to whixh drivers I need?
