UEFI or Legacy BIOS on T3610?

This question has been answered by sugarbear18

I want to buy a T3610.

Dell offers it with Win 8 license,  downgraded to Win 7 Pro.

I assume this means Win 7 Pro 64-bit is installed, with option to upgrade to Win 8 at later date.  True?

I want to multi-boot Win 7 and various flavors of Linux (Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora) on this machine.

Linux often has problems multi-booting with Windows if Windows is installed using UEFI_GPT_secure boot. (I know secure boot can be disabled)

Can someone tell me definitively:

When the T3610 is shipped, has Win 7 Pro 64-bit been installed in UEFI or in Legacy/bios mode???

Thanks in advance.

  • I got an answer for you. Factory default is Legacy in Window 7 Pro.

  • Hi Rhalls,

You would be able to go into the bios and change it from UEFI to Legacy if you wanted to. Both options are there.

  • No, that's not how it works.

The first OS to be installed determines how all subsequent OS's must be installed.

In the case of the T3610 from the factory, Win 7 would be the first OS installed.

Once Win 7 is installed under UEFI, all other OS's have to be installed under UEFI.

Legacy uses MBR to hold boot instruction.

UEFI uses GPT partition table to hold boot instruction (MBR is not present).

You cannot have both GPT partition table and MBR on the same computer.

Therefore, I need to know how Win 7 Pro 64-bit is installed at the factory: UEFI or legacy?

    Thanks.

  • I am checking with a moderator to see if he can access internal documents that will tell you for sure how the OS is installed.

  • Teddi,

Thank you for helping and thank you for following up on this. To an extent, you are correct. I do have more information that I'd like to share.

The default with Windows 7 will not always be MBR. The Dell standard for this is as follows:

If you order the T3610 with the factory RAID or boot partition being less than 2 TBs, the default will be MBR. This is regardless of choosing Windows 7 64 or Windows 8 64.

If you order the T3610 with the factory RAID or boot partition being more than 2 TBs, the default will be GPT.

Feel free to reply with any questions/concerns/feedback about my response.
