What CPU is best to get for a SBS 2011 server for the next 10 years. Should I get a second processor as well?

    A good choise or 1600 MHz should be instead?

  • I wouldn't start with the assumption that a server will last you 10 years. 5 years is doable, but after that spare/replacement parts are going to be very expensive to lay your hands on (CPU, memory, motherboard, etc). Dell will extend the warranty usually up to 5 years after the original purchase, as they run into the same issue with the cost of finding replacement parts (for warranty work).

    Memory bandwidth will not be noticeable except in very specific uses of a system.

    What are you wanting to run on that server? SQL, Exchange, AD (including DNS/DHCP), and a whole bunch of other things, or just AD/DNS/DHCP and maybe some shares? The latter can be done with any of the listed CPUs with more than enough power to spare. However, running Exchange/SQL and things may require a whole lot more depending on how many users and such.

    GoIntern, can you tell me where you got the pricing for the above listed drives?

    I recently received a much higher quote from our Dell team for drives of the same description...

    400GB Solid State Drive SAS Value SLC 6Gbps 2.5in Hot-plug Drive,3.5in HYB CARR,CusKit (342-5638) for $4,324.11 (that after I complained about the $6000+ initial quote)

    Obviously there are cheaper drives from other vendors, but I want a supported configuration for my production environment.
