I have a client that wants a new backup server that uses a RAID 5 array (probably 3 drives plus a hot spare) for data and three or four drives that can be pulled and used as removable media to replace LTO tapes.
Can this be accomplished with any PowerEdge systems, and does anyone have some sort of trays or containers that could be used to transport these drives once removed besides an anti-static bag in a padded ardboard box?
Has anyone done or seen a setup like this and is there a better method. (That doesn't involve tape?)
Removing a drive from a server will trigger an alarm every single time. Also; even though the hotswap bays are probably made to handle numerous insertions and removals, the chance of something breaking during a removal or insertion is fairly realistic (over the economic lifespan of the server) if you do this several times a week.
Tape is really the way to go for larger backups, or you could look into the Powervault RD1000 or USB harddrives (nowhere near as fast, but made for removal and reconnecting).
