Vostro 200 mini tower desktop processor speed limitation!

This question has been answered by shesagordie

1.  I would like to increase its processor speed from 1.6 Ghz to at least 3.0 Ghz. Is it possible & how can I do it?

2. While I am at it do I need to replace/change anything else, e.g. RAM size?

Thanks

The Core 2 Duo E8600 3.33GHz 6M L2 Cache processor should work fine, in the Vostro 200 with the BIOS Version, already noted in my post.

Regards to the  Core 2 Extreme QX9650 Quad-Core Processor, 3 GHz, 12M L2 Cache, this will not work with the motherboard that's installed in your Vostro 200, for a Core 2 Quad to be compatible, a G33M03 motherboard and a 350w PSU is required, I believe that your motherboard is the G33M02 version with a 300w PSU.

The Vostro 200 was built with two different motherboards, either a G33M02, or G33M03.

If your vostro 200 was purchased with either a Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core or Celeron processor and a 300w power supply, this system usually has a FoxConn G33M02 motherboard, that only supports Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core and Celeron processors.

If you have a Core 2 Quad processor and a 350w power supply, you have the FoxConn DG33M03 motherboard.

This motherboard can be used for both Quad 4 & Core 2 Duo processors.

The following processors are Vostro 200 compatible with BIOS version: 1.0.16

Prior to installing the processor, you need to check that BIOS version 1.0.16, when support for newer processors was added, is installed.

  • Great!

One more favor: Could you, please, check this web page?

    http://www.ideacomputadoras.com/procesador-core-e8500-1333-p-621.html

I just wanna make sure this product is what you are talking about.

Thank you again. Your support is really helpful.

  • Say no more.

Only if I cannot contact the seller, I will try another one, and maybe I will ask you the compatibility.

Thank you again. You have done a great job.

  •  Marihuas

    Happy to have helped.

  • Hello, again!

Unfortunately, the seller told me "sorry: sold out product".

So, could you check this web page:?

    http://www.entrale.com/product_info.php?cPath=2926_4028_4032&products_id=91548

If you do not wanna visit the web page (which does not have a picture of the processor they are selling), maybe what I wrote below will be enough to tell me whether the processor is compatible with my vostro 200 minitower:

    ITL CORE 2 DUO E8500 3.16GHZ 6MB 775

Well, that is all. Thank you for your help. Too bad in Mexico we do not have as good helpers as you.

By the way, what is the name of the kitty shown in your picture?

  • Marihuas

Yep, the LGA-775, CORE 2 DUO E8500 3.16GHz 6MB will also, work in the Vostro 200 MT.

Her name is 'Bubbles' because of her bubbly personality. LOL

  • Hello, again!

You do not know it, but trying to get a processor in Mexico is really difficult.

Now somebody is selling me a Pentium dual core G860, 3.0 Ghz, 3mb cache, bus speed: 5GT/s. Is it compatible with my vostro 200MT?

Also, would you recommend me to get it, or keep my original processor? I want to upgrade my pc just to use certain 3d-animation software.

    Thank you again.

  • Marihuas

No,  the Pentium dual core G860 requires an LGA 1155 socket and is not compatible with the Vostro 200 MT that has a LGA 775.

Regards to ' would you recommend me to get it, or keep my original processor?', what is the processor that is installed in the Vostro?

    Bev.

  • Hello again!

    My PC´s processor is an Intel pentium dual-core E2160 (1.80Ghz, 1mb L2 cache, 800FSB)

The software I wanna use is the 3ds max 2013.

Thank you for keeping me from buying the dual core G860.

Say hello to bubbles for me!

  • Marihuas

You can the minimum system requirements for Autodesk 3ds 2013 here:

It's not just the processor you need to check.

    The Conroe E2160, 1.8G, 1MB, 800FSB should work for the 2013 version.
