Dell optiplex gx280 small form factor cpu

  • I have a barebones optiplex gx280 and am looking for cheap parts.  As far as the cpu goes I know the Pentium 4 HT 5xx series works but would this work as well?

    Pentium 4 HT 631 D0/C1 (05A) "Cedar Mill" 3.0GHz 2MB 800MT/s 15x 1.200-1.325V 65W LGA775 HH80552PG0802M

    Hi

That CPU will {not} work at all !!

Your board does not support 65 NM Technology it will only run

on 90 NM Technology and you will find out the computer you have will not run any 6xx chips

because they have 2 meg,s of level 2 cache and your board will only go with a chip that is

1 meg cache level 2 cache max.

I have read many post asking the same question one person bought a 670 chip

only to find it does not work because of the 2 meg cache a bios update did not work

also for that chip the specs say it will work but i think Dell disabled it in the bios

or the voltage is not be right for your 915 chip set !

You can read the link above on the chips that will work !!

The 5xx and 6xx 670-672 will works for the 925 x-xe but only 90 NM will work .

    Good Luck

  • man now i'm confused.  i went through the search and people have put the 6xx series in and works.  as long as it's a 6x0 series people say it's fine.  which is it?
  • Hi

I never read any post were a 6xx will work with a 915 chipset .

Do you have a link to it ?

But the 60 NM chip you asked above will not work at all

it will not work even on my 925 x-xe 90 nm ONLY.

there have been confirmations that as long as it's not cedar mill then it should work.  i think the prescotts 6x0 series works but the cedar mill 6x1 do not.

  • Hi

I see where one psrson said it woked for him

but if i can find the other post were this person said it did not work for him

    i will post it .

And i think there at lest two others that said it would not work as well .

    Hi

You might post to this link and ask if he ever got a 6xx -670 to work even after changing

it to several other motherboards it did not work that i see!

If you have a 6xx chip it does not hurt to try it you may get lucky .

If it does\or does not works post back to let others know!!

    Good Luck

  • Is the gx280 the same as the dimension 8400?
  • so i put a pentium 4 631 in there and it doesn't boot.  no beeps or anything...just a solid amber power light.  does that mean it is not compatible?  i wish i could see what the bios version is.
  • Hi

No your computer is a lot older that a 8400 with the 925 chip set is not the same yours should be a 915

    if even that ,

and as i said before the {631 will never work} with your computer or mine it has to be 90 NM Technolage

not 65 NM the 631 and above is for the 945 chip set .

  • Here's another claiming that their's worked.  http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=oplex_upgrade&thread.id=14445&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

I even saw where somebody claimed their "cedar mill" 641 pentium 4 worked.  but i can't find it anymore.

  • also would like to know if a incompatible cpu would just leave the power light orange with no lights in the back indicating an error.
  • Hi

    Yes it will !
