New graphics card for gaming on a Optiplex 745

  • Hi

    I have a dell optiplex 745 mini tower currently with a Intel(R) Q965/Q963 Express Chipset Family (Intel(R) GMA 3000) according to http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest.

I'm looking to run Flight Simulator 2004 (all settings to the high end), Battlefield 2142, attempt FSX and try World Conflict. I'm also looking to run dual monitors (but i understand most modern cards can do that anyway). With a budget of around £80 ($150-160) I'm looking for a reasonable card?

    Any suggestions?

My initial thoughts were a NVIDIA 8600GT card, is it any good or could I do better?

    Thanks
  • With most games listed except FSX, a 8600 GTS card will be the least I would want.  You can get a 7950 GT card as well and will play all the games listed, except once more the FSX at a very good graphic level.

You can do better, but you will have to save up more for the better performers, such as the 8800 GT card.

    Windows 7 RC 7100

  • Thanks SR45.
From your post does that mean I could run the 8600GTS and 7950GT in SLI mode with the current motherboard in the Optiplex?

I might look into the 8800GT but again would that card work with the Optiplex? And any ideas how much one would cost from a reliable retailer?

    Thanks
  • Nope. Your system is not SLI capable. The XPS 700 series Dell systems are.

Below link is to one such 8800 GT card to look at..

You have a 305 watt power supply, and others with that power supply have installed an 8800 GT card without issues.  Unknown to me about a Optiplex system.  Others may wish to weigh in on this question.

I do not work for Dell. I too am a user.
The forum is primarily user to user, with Dell employees moderating.

  • Thanks guys for the links. The cards sweet but out of my price range. I did however, find this one
any thoughts on it? Would it meet my requirements in my first post?
  • That card you linked to is horribly overpriced. You should be able to get an 8600GTS for less. An 8600GT or preferably GTS is as low as you'd want to reasonably go, and on a price/performance basis an 8800GT or GTS absolutely destroys any 8600-they're all rip offs compared with the 8800 cards.
  • Try this link for an 8600 GTS for $99.99 until 1/31/2008

They also have the 8600 GTS XXX for $109.99 until 1/31/2008

I am thinking about putting one of these in my Dimension 9150.

Several have told me to look for a 7900 or 7950, but I am just too cheap!

I think one of these 8600 GTS' will do fine.
