Dimension L700CXE Processor

  • Wow, there are TONS of 133 mhz FSB P3 1.0 ghz out there, but I am having a heck of a time finding a 100 mhz FSB on ebay.

The Celeries are half as much as the P3's on Starmicro....do you think that the P3 is worth paying twice as much? I don't want to pay $50 for the P3.  I don't think the system is worth that.

Yes, I would use a P-3, instead of a Celeron any day of the week, that's why they cost more.

  • Is it true that I can use a 1.1 Ghz Celeron in here, as long as it has the 128k L2 and 100mhz FSB?  peterfelgate sorta mentioned this earlier, and someone on another board is saying the same.

  • Just so I know, where do you find this information?

How can I be sure that it is indeed the CA810E board, not just the CA810?

I have been looking at the Intel site, which I know is not completely accurate, since this is technically a Dell board.

    Thanks,

Have you tried checking the label on the motherboard?

You could download this small free CPU-Z utility,

  • Yes, the utlities I have used (CPU-Z, SysID, Belarc, etc) say its the CA810E.  Is this always 100% accurate?

Intel claims that the max processor for this board is the 850 P3 at 100 mhz FSB, and maybe the 1.0 ghz P3 at 133 FSB. The max Celeron is 900.

If this is not accurate since this is a Dell Intel board, where does one go for answers?

I Googled the AA # on the board (A53824-302) and got few results.

Where do I find for myself that this board can handle up to either a P3 1 ghz, or a Celeron 1.1 ghz?

Over the years, I've found those utilities to be accurate.

Also, I've upgraded L Series systems with 1.1gb Celeron and P-3 1.1gb processors without any problems.

For information read the Dell specifications for the L Series [that I have already posted in this thread],

You will notice that the 1.1gb P-3 is included.

  • So it does not matter that it is a "CXE?"

I have looked at that documentation several times, but I guess I misinterpreted it.

It is not exacly the most clear information.

I have also been using this: http://www.roberthancock.com/dell/delllproc.htm as a resource, which states that "The BIOS on these machines appears to report the board being a CA810E, but the PCI device IDs for the chipset appear to indicate it has an original 810 chipset, not an 810E"

So if this were the case, then wouldn't the utility be reporting what the BIOS reports?

Have you upgraded a CXE to a 1.1 or 1.0 P3 or Celeron?

    PK
  • The AA # on this board is A53824-302.

The BIOS version that comes up at startup does say CA81020A.10A.0038.P12.0103071311 which does indicate the CA810E board.

I assume that the AA# is different since its a Dell board?

The big chip on the board just says "810."  It also has "SL3P7" on it.

Even if I do positively ID this board as the E, then Intel's information still only shows the max processor for this board is the 850 P3 at 100 mhz FSB, and maybe the 1.0 ghz P3 at 133 FSB, depending on the board revision.  The max Celeron is 900.

Is the Intel info out of date or is this a case where you can't go by Intel's info since this is a Dell board?  Then where do you go if you can't find any info on the AA#?

It's a Dell motherboard, not an Intel, use the Dell specifications already posted.

  • Hmmm...OK

So here are my options then?:

A USED Celeron 950 with 100mhz FSB for $12.95  + probably around $5 shipping from a seller i have done business with before on ebay

A USED Celeron 1.1 with 100 mhz FSB for $13.95 + probably around $5 shipping from the same source.

A NEW Celeron 1.0 with 100 mhz FSB for $20.00 + free UPS ground from Starmicro.net

A NEW Celeron 1.1 with 100 mhz FSB for $16.50+ free UPS ground from Starmicro.net

The NEW P3 from Starmicro is just too high. ($48)

I am thinking that the NEW 1.1 Celeron from Starmicro would be the way to go.  1.1 ghz is cheaper than 1.0???  Whats up with that?

If we are 100% sure that the 1.1 ghz will work, then $16.50 is not too bad of an investment, i don't think.

I wish i could find a P3/100 mhz FSB on the cheap, but i think a Celery will have to do.

One last thing to note:  When I run a utility such as SysID or CPU-Z, it shows a bus speed of 66.6 mhz. This is due to the fact that the Celeron 700 runs at that speed, right? Not that the motherboard has a 66 mhz FSB limit?  When I install the Celeron with a 100mhz FSB, it will show 100 mhz?

  • If I posted reports from CPU-Z, SysID, PC Wizard, and Everest, would that help determine what is going on here?

To me, some of the info on the reports contradicts.  In some places they say the board is the "E" and in others it does not.

Does this even matter?  Will either the CA810 or the CA810E support the processors I am looking at, or does it have to be the "E"?

I am sorry for being a pest, but this just does not make sense to me.  I am almost to the point of just saying "forget it!"

  • You have not given up on me, have you?

I am not trying to be annoying.....I am trying to learn.

Here's some info from those utilities.  I have edited out info that did not appear to be relevant.

Is there anything here that will shed some light?

I would really like to get this figured out so I can order the processor soon and get this system ready for my dad.
