Compellent Array Support in Foglight for Storage Management 3.0

With the launch of Foglight for Storage Management 3.0, we have significantly improved our support for Compellent storage arrays. In this BLOG, I’ll present some screenshots that illustrate the information that we’re now able to collect from the Compellent arrays.

Foglight for Storage Management collects information from the Compellent arrays using an API provided by the Compellent Enterprise Manager (CEM) software. A single agent can collect from all of the arrays visible in Enterprise Manager. The previous version of Foglight for Storage Management (version 2.5) collected from Compellent arrays using standard SMI-S protocol. Now that we’re using the CEM API we’re able to collect a much richer and more extensive set of metrics than we could before.

From the “Summary” tab, we can quickly ascertain the health of each of the subcomponents that make up this Compellent array by reviewing the “Related Inventory” section. It tells us how many of each subcomponent are present and the highest level alarm (warning, critical, or failure) that has triggered for each. We also get a summarized view of pool capacity and LUN/disk health.

From the “Controllers-Ports” tab, we can quickly identify which controllers and ports are the most active. And we get detailed performance and health information for every controller and port in the array.

Now that we’ve added support for pools, we’re able to monitor performance and capacity information for each of the pools that are created within the Compellent array. This includes tracking the amount of overcommitment and available usable capacity for thinly provisioned pools.

On the “LUNs” tab, we can quickly identify which LUNs are the most active and/or exhibiting the worst performance. We also get detailed performance, capacity, and health information for every LUN in the array.

From the “Disks” tab, we see which disks are most active and experiencing the worst performance. We also get detailed performance, capacity, and health information for every disk in the array.

Foglight for Storage Management can map your entire storage topology from VM-to-disk spindle. And, with our one-click storage troubleshooting feature (which I described in a previous BLOG), you can quickly identify bottlenecks in your Compellent storage arrays that are causing slow VM performance.

In summary, with the improved monitoring support that we’ve included in Foglight for Storage Management 3.0, you’re now able to better monitor and resolve storage-related performance issues quicker when you have Compellent storage arrays in your environment.
