What's New in Foglight for Virtualization Enterprise Edition v. 7.1!

Foglight for virtualization, Enterprise Edition 7.1 was recently released. Even though this is a patch release, it’s packed with many small and large changes and improvements. Let’s take a quick look at them:

  • New in Optimization Cartridge
  • Create and manage Credential groups for optimization
  • § To make it easy to assign different credentials to different groups of VMs or services, you can now create credential groups. For example, VMs belonging to Marketing and others belonging to Accounting organization can be given two different credentials for optimization.
  • Guest Storage (disk) resizing
  • Reclaim unused storage from running guest VMs. So for example, a VM is using only 40 GB storage of the total assigned 200 GB <vmdk>, then you can reclaim the unused 160 GB space. Remember that the space is already being used for the guest file system (NTFS/ext2/ext3), but there is no actual data (i.e. vmdk is formatted with a file system). Windows and Linux guests are supported. For fuller details, please see the user guide.

  • Performance improvements
  • Improved dashboard performance for the VMware cartridge as well as the Capacity Planning cartridge. This is done by reducing the time spent on processing batch queries
  • Automation cartridge performance is improved to execute queries without timeouts

  • Support for monitoring the new VMware vSphere 5.5
  • VMware released vSphere 5.5 after VMworld 2013 (September). Foglight now supports monitoring and collecting data from vSphere 5.5
  • Support for monitoring the Hyper-v 2012 R2
  • Microsoft hyper-v 2012 R2 came out in October. This platform is now validated and is supported by Foglight.
  • Monitor vApp objects used by VMware vCloud Director
  • A new tile is added that can quickly show all the vApps configured. vApp is a collection of two or more VMs that are typically used in a single function (Such as a file server).

  • Simplified configuration for VMware View cartridge
  • VMware View monitoring uses windows registry based configuration values. A new executable script is provided to make all the registry changes needed to implement the VMware View monitoring
  • Enhanced discovery method to automatically find View related servers using Active Directory
  • Support for monitoring VMware View v. 5.0 and 5.2
  • Agent Manager performance and configuration improvements
  • Configuration is streamlined with automatic resource negotiations at runtime
  • Monitoring of Agent Manager for low-memory or crash situations
  • Better collection of support data during failures and crashes
  • Support for running Agent Manager on Windows 2012 R2 server

I have attempted to give important details here, but there are many more details about this release that you can read here: http://edocs.quest.com/vfoglight/710/files/FoglightFor_VirtualizationEE71_StorageManagement302_ReleaseNotes.html
