In the virtual environment era IT organizations need proper tools to help them understand the current resource capacity, utilization, and rate of growth, in order to accurately forecast resource requirements to satisfy immediate and long term need of the business. The Capacity Management cartridge in FVE provides visibility into key indicators to help IT organizations achieve this goal.

Capacity

By selecting a cluster, the FVE Capacity Management can quickly provide information about current capacity and the most immediate bottleneck in that cluster. Specifically, you can see the total number of virtual machines in the cluster, number of virtual machines currently running, and the number of virtual machines that could potentially be added to the cluster. It will also shows the most immediate resource bottleneck (in this case storage) to help you understand why there is a limit in number of VMs that could be added.

This FVE Capacity Management does its extrapolation based on few simple selections in the setting, such as: how much historical data should be taken into consideration to calculate the workload and how conservative/aggressive you want to be in the calculation, which results into creation of a “Typical” VM to be used for the calculation. You can also define the Capacity Thresholds ranges for Normal, Warning, Critical and Fatal.

Based on the Capacity Management threshold ranges you have setup in the Settings, FVE will provide a chart and the specific resources you would need to be in a Green/Normal condition.

Bottlenecks

The “Bottlenecks” feature in FVE Capacity Manager provides the three key resources (CPU, Memory, and Storage) listed in order of constraining effect. The most constraining resource is listed on top, whereas the least constraining resource is at the bottom.

Resource Consumption

The Resource Consumption screen shows a chart for the historical trending, current resource consumption, and forecasting of future resource requirement (based on extrapolation of current rate of growth) for Storage, Memory, and CPU. It also provides a breakdown of Used V.s Capacity for each resource.

Scenario Modeler

Scenario Modeler provides the ability to create “What If” scenarios where you could add/remove VMs from/to servers. You can either use existing hosts or use the “Usage Scenario Settings” to define resources associated with CPU Capacity, Memory Capacity, Network Bandwidth, and Available Storage. The Scenario Modeler provides charts to show how feasible it would be to run the selected workload on the given resources.

The Capacity Management feature in FVE provides the visibility needed to proactively manage the virtual environment and stay ahead of resource requirements before they impact user experience.
