Installing Dell IT Assistant

The following is a list of what you will need on your system before you can install ITA. You don't need external internet connectivity to download these applications, as many are features of the Windows Server operating system or bundled with the ITA installer package.

• MS Visual Studio 2005 SP1 runtime (done via the ITA installer)

• .NET Framework 3.5.1
  
  • Installed via ITA wizard on OSes before Server 2008, as a feature on 2008 and newer
  • To install as a feature, click Start > Administrative Tools > Server Manager > Features, the select and install .NET Framework
• MS SQL Express Server
  
  • Make sure to create a "default instance" instead of giving your SQL instance a custom name.
• SNMP services
  
  • To install as a feature, click Start > Administrative Tools > Server Manager > Features, the select and install SNMP Services
• Java
  
  • You will need Java on any client browser that wants to log into the ITA web interface
  • make sure to add the parameter -Xmx356MB -Djava.net.preferIPv6Addresses=true in the advanced tab of Java.
• Dell applet
  • You will need to accept the installation of a Dell applet on your client system before using ITA

Troubleshooting ITA

While running and logging into ITA, you might encounter the following issues. Here is a list of common solutions:

ITA hangs during login when clicking on the IT Assistant desktop icon

• Try logging into https://localhost:2607 instead - the desktop icon uses https://<servername>:2607. You can only log in to localhost if you are on the same machine that ITA was installed on.

Error message: "IT Assistant will not launch because a dependent component is not installed."

• Change the settings mentioned in the error messages below in Internet Explorer via Tools > Internet Options > Security Tab

I. Automatic prompting for ActiveX controlls setting is disabled

• Enable Automatic prmopting for ActiveX controllers under ActiveX controlls and plugins in the security zone that IT assistant is classified in (whether local Internet, Internet, or Trusted Sites).

II. Enable Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing > Enable Third-party browser extensions

Error message: "There is a problem with this website's security certificate. We recommend that you close this webpage and do not continue to this website.:

• IE throws this error each time you open ITA in a browser. It is OK to choose "continute to this website (not recommended)

Error message: "The session has expired. Log in again. You can configure the session timeout via Preferences (Web Server Properties) from the top navigation bar. If you still see this error, see the online help for more information"

• Some users have experienced this problem if the client machine has more than one Network Interface Card (NIC). If you are attached to two separate networks via 2 NICs, try temporarily disabling one network card then trying to log into ITA again after restarting the browser

• Other users have reported that disabling IPv6 on the client has resolved this issue

• Another step to try is unchecking the "Enable the Next generation Java Plug-in option” in the Advanced Tab of the Java Plug-In
