Discovery question - best way to make sure all servers are discovered (not yet configured, new and legacy servers)

This question is not answered

Hi

we are using OME 2.3

I would like to discover the following
- iDRAC (with our company unique password)
- iDRAC (still with the default DELL password)
- old DELL legacy server that are not supported by OME 2.3 (eg PowerEdge 2950, ...)

what would be the best option to do this?

This is what i have now configured
- Discovery range "iDRAC"
WSMAN (with our company unique password)
- Discovery range "SNMP
Other Devices (company unique SNMP, Public)

* Downside of this setup is, I have to scan all IP ranges, 2 times (it takes about 2,5 days to complete)

* the SNMP discovery range will catch all legacy servers and iDRAC with default password
But also all other devices on our network (Printers, ...)

* It also seems that when performing a manual inventory of 1 server, the server ends up in "Issues
and Resolution for updates" with the reason that it was discovered by SNMP instead of WSMAN?
it is is corrected after the real discovery schedule runs

  • Hi, thanks for the query.

It would be best for you to have separation of discovery ranges in OME, as you are having a mixed environment. Adding all protocols with entire range might lead to problems.

    Recommendation:

    - iDRAC (with our company unique password)
Create a range containing target IP addresses (or a csv) only. Select iDRAC WSMAN option and provide company specific credentials.

    - iDRAC (still with the default DELL password)
Create a range containing target IP addresses (or a csv) only. Select iDRAC WSMAN option and provide default Dell credentials.

    - old DELL legacy server that are not supported by OME 2.3 (eg PowerEdge 2950, ...)
Create a range containing target IP addresses (or a csv) only. Select Other SNMP option and provide the community string.

The key here is to separate out ranges and discover only the targets that you wish to manage in OME.

    Thanks,

    Shivendra
