SQL Express in Larger Environment? Database Options?

  • I am working on an OME installation that will have about 1,500 devices total.  Most of these will be monitored via agentless and some will be monitored with the ESXi OMSA agent.

We use Oracle exclusively in our environment.  It looks as though OME does not support Oracle.  Correct?

We don't have the money to spend on a full SQL license and are looking at our options.  I have thoroughly read the OME documents included the performance and scalability information and am aware that the recommendation is to not use SQL express.

Does anyone have any insight or recommendations on how to use SQL Express in an environment with 1,500 devices?  Is anyone running SQL express in a larger environment?

    Thoughts!?  Thanks!

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your post.

    OME does not support Oracle.

OME ships with the express edition of SQL and it is recommended to use Standard edition for larger installations to get better performance. SQL express is limited to use single CPU and 1GB memory which may cause performance issues when you have larger number of servers.

Having said this, if you are going with express edition, you can make sure you follow the hardware recommendations from the user guide/online help in OME. You can also reduce the discovery/inventory speed in OME by moving the slider to the left(Located under Manage->Discovery and Inventory and clicking the Discovery and Inventory Schedule links from the left.)

Let us know how it goes.

  • Hi Abhijit,

Can I make an RFE for OME to support a Postgresql/Mysql connector in future?

  • Definitely. We'll get the requirement across to marketing to be considered for future releases.

  • Is it possible to upgrade SQL express to full version without messing up the OME install?  In otherwords, if we started with SQL Express and eventually found that the performance wasn't quite good enough, could upgrade to SQL enterprise?  Thanks!

  • Hi,

Take a look at this thread. It lists the process of DB migration for OME.
you can start with SQL express and migrate the DB later to non express SQL version.
