OME Update and ESX 4.0

  • I am not having great success with running updates from OME with my ESX system.  I enable root to have SSH access and was able to update the BIOS, the problem was that OME never cleared the task.  It stated that it was still pending even though the ESX server had already rebooted.

After that I tried to update the PERC controller, again the task sat at 0% and even worse gave information about the BIOS update rather than the PERC update.   I have no way of knowing if the update is completed.  Should I reboot?  Did anything at all happen?

It does not appear that OME works with ESX very well.  Pretty disappointing so far.

  • Hi and thanks for trying OME 1.0 Open Eval.

Yes, it really _does_ work. :-)

Sometimes it happens when the update is applied and a reboot occurs, in that case there may be trouble communicating back to the task on the OME server and the status is not updated.

After the patch runs, inventory can be re-run, or if you wait a few minutes, it will re-run on its own and the compliance report on the System Update page will get updated.    So you can see the updated version in the inventory page or the compliance report (after inventory has re-run).

Hope this helps and please keep posting your observations on OME 1.0 Open Eval.

  • I'm not refering to the inventory.  I manually reran the inventory and saw that the BIOS was now showing the lateset and greatest.  I am talking about actually setting up an update task of the PERC controller.  It starts the update but stays in pending and never progresses from 0%.  When I choose to show details, it shows the information from the BIOS update instead of the PERC update I initiated.  I tried it twice with the exact same result.

  • Thanks for the additional detail.  I will forward this info to the team and see if they can reproduce.

Are you able to see the PERC inventory updated in the inventory page or compliance report?

    Rob

  • No, nothing gets updated.  The task goes into pending and never executes.

  • i find the easiest way to see if something is running is to login to the server and run taskmgr - check to see if the update package is being applied

I had a patch that kept trying to install and failing, but no message back on OME until i tried to run the package locally and it failed there (with an error message)

  • Say, can you let me know what exact version of ESX you are running?  And what perc driver file you are trying to apply?  I'll check around here more once I get that info.

It might be good to open a ticket at: 800-945-3355 and they may be able to grab some logs.

    thx
