  • I got this working, but I did have to change the command:

    performanceStats file=\"c"\\md3000iPerfStats.csv\";"

    to read:

performanceStats file=\"c":\md3000iPerfStats.csv\";" ----> (Notice the ":" after the c" instead of the extra "\")

Also, just for others that might run this... If you run the 250 iterations as show in the above command, it may take a while... I changed it to 20 just to make sure it was doing something... Finally I got the "completed successfully" message after about 4 - 5 minutes...

Thanks again Scott for the info...

  • Sean,

Thanks for catching the error on the command. I thought that I had used copy and paste - but I guess somewhere it got changed. I went ahead and made the change in the page text as well. Glad to hear that you were able to get it working.

    Thanks - Todd
  • No problem, just hoping to help someone else out that comes across this info...

Hey, while were at it, I've been having trouble getting a meaningful graph out of excel... Do you know which graph type and options you used to get the one shown??

    Thanks again!
  • Now you want the real techie stuff! I used a regular line graph. The trick is to select all the rows in excel and then do sort based on the first column (Which has the names for virtual disks, controllers, and array totals). After sorting by the name, you will be able to go in and select all the data points for whatever it is you want to look at. In my case I selected the MBps and IOPs data for one of the virtual disks.

Let me know if you need more details - the specifics of where to go in Excel change a lot with Office 2007. I would have some time tomorrow to grab some screen shots and highlight how you do the sort.

  • Ahh.. sort first! cool I will give that a shot tomorrow. Thanks.

Yea, I've been working with o2k7 for the last month or so and this is the first real issue i've had...

On a related note, do you know of any SAS connected SAN that supports more than 4 hosts? We have a MD3000i obviously using iSCSI, but our director is worried about performance for some other applications like clustered oracle nodes, etc... but don't necessarily want to spend the money on a MD3000 for two nodes (redundant) or 4 nodes, each with a single path. Would like to be able to attach maybe 8 hosts even if they each used a single connection.

    Thanks!
  • I don't know of any SAS array that would support that many direct attached hosts. I would guess that using iSCSI with an ethernet switch is probably about as low cost as you are going to get. Attaching 8 hosts to either the MD3000 or MD3000i could be a potential perfomance problem if all of the hosts are heavy I/O. I have seen that iSCSI performance is usually pretty good with small block random I/O - like in Exchange or an OLTP database.

  • I posted a quick how to video on this wiki page - MD3000i Performance Monitoring - http://www.delltechcenter.com/page/MD3000i+Performance+Monitoring

It shows how to use Excel 2007 to create a graph of the performance data that is output by the MD3000i when using the smCLI as talked about in this thread.
