Site Admin - Are there particular Sharepoint services that must be running or can this really run on any Sharepoint server?

This question is not answered

The Site Admin documentation says that it must be installed on a Sharepoint front end server.  In Sharepoint 2010 there is no difference between a front end server and and a back end server, it is simply a matter of what you run on each of these.  Can someone please explain for Sharepoint 2010, what is required for it to Site Admin, are there particular Sharepoint services that must be running or can this really run on any Sharepoint server? Is it just the  "Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Application" that has to be running?

  • Hi Steve,

I think it might be difference in terminology. Our documentation assumes back-end server is a server that has only SQL on ii and does not have SharePoint installed. Web Front End server as well as Application server has SharePoint installed and their role is defined by services running on each of the server. Both of them have SharePoint API.

So, in order to get all Information Portal features to work, it should be installed on either of Web-Front-End server or Application server i.e. server that has SharePoint API on it (has SharePoint installed)

    Thanks,

    Kate
