Foglight has integrated a number of great technologies together allowing a flexible architecture of agent or agent-less technologies.

One which has created a lot of interest over the last couple years is the ability to integrate the Foglight Performance Analys database agents into the Foglight web console.

This is also a feature which is commonly confusing for customers to enable so here is a quick tutorial showing you how...

Note that this capability is undergoing many enhancements as we speak so the process will change with subsequent versions but the concept will stay much the same.

  1. Firstly, make sure you have correctly installed the Foglight Performance Analysis for Databases agent.
  • The best way to confirm this is to open the Performance Analysis thick client and confirm you can connect to the monitored database.
  • If you are having troubles with this step, search for "performance analysis installation" in the upper right corner of this blog.
  • Open the Foglight console and go to the "Databases" Dashboard selecting your database instance as shown below.
  • If your database is not listed, click "Discover more databases" in the upper right corner to assure the database is being monitored.
  • Now that your database is selected, go to the upper right corner of the screen and hit the button "Administer agents" and select "Connection Details" as shown below.
  • Notice on the far right that the "SC" button is not selected. This means that Stealth Collect (the name of the Performance Analysis agent) has not been integrated.
  • Go ahead and hit the button "Detect StealthCollect" being sure to change the port 3566 if your agent is setup with anything different from the default.
  • Foglight will now look for any communication coming from the database host on the specified port.
  • If this step fails, consider the possibility of any firewalls blocking the port between the Foglight Server and the monitored instance.
  • Note that sometimes there may be agent compatibility issues if the product versions are very different. The "Details" collumn will provide more feedback.
  • If sucessful, Foglight will show the status below and you can hit the button "Save Changes" in the lower right hand corner.
  • Thats it! You have now integrated the complete Foglight for databases solution including both the Remote collectors as well as the Agent collectors.
  • If you go back to the main databases dashboard (where all the databases are listed), scroll to the right and you will see the following icon for all integrated agents:

  • Now all advisories from the agent as well as low level session and performance details will automatically be available from the web console in Foglight.

Thanks and as always, please let us know if you have any ideas or enhancement requests to make the product even better.
