Community projects: Profile tool and Cloud Launcher

The profile tool and cloud launcher are nascent open source projects that we have started doing some initial work on at github

  • Profile Tool: The idea behind the profile tool is to provide access to a library of community created profiles on github, such as Ruby and Android, to quickly set up your development environments and tool chains.
  • Cloud launcher: The cloud launcher enables you to create “microclouds” on your laptop, simulating an at-scale environment, and then deploy that environment seamlessly to the cloud.  Today the launcher utilizes Linux Containers to model your environment on your laptop and then uses Juju to jettison that environment to the cloud.  The launcher project on github will allow for community expansion on this concept using different technologies and approaches.

Comments
  • I'm really interested in the "microcloud" concept - what sorts of clouds are we talking about here? Virtual machines or something like Heroku or App Engine? It's killer features like this that I haven't seen anywhere else that'll make Sputnik a success.

  • So, I have mine here, and just wondering, where exactly are the profile tool and the cloud tool?  How do I run/use them?

  • It would be helpful if a current project Sputnik install image could be made available since the Haswell machine has a different wireless adapted. Also, a Kernel PPA that works with Ubuntu 13.10 would be helpful since there still appear to be wireless issues with 12.04, 12.10 and 13.04. I have mentioned these issues on the Developer Edition forum.
