  • Thought I bought a 4G box. 3 GB not really enough to do useful work in ubuntu and run a windows 7 VM at the same time. I just installed the latest BIOS, that made no difference.

  • You're using Intel's integrated graphics. The Intel GPU needs memory to work. That's where the missing memory is being used.

  • I'm not sure how you are viewing your memory but here is what System Monitor tells me:

    "3.6 GiB (46.8%) of 7.7 GiB"

    Obviously I have the 8G model, but it sure doesn't seem like 1G is being reserved for the video. Something must not be right with your set-up. Can't really help you though.

  • Anybody else have the 4G model?  How much RAM does your Linux installation see?

    I don't think I did anything unusual in my setup.  I could not find a BIOS setting to allocate less RAM to video.

  • I think you are interpreting the dmesg line incorrectly. Please read unix.stackexchange.com/.../why-does-linux-show-both-more-and-less-memory-than-i-physically-have-installed.

    Something like `free -m` or `cat /proc/meminfo | grep MemTotal` will give you a picture of the RAM available that is closer to what you're expecting.

    As others have alluded to on this thread, there will be address spaces reserved for non-memory functions on a computer (onboard graphics, devices, etc.).  Some motherboards will allow you to remap the space via the BIOS so that you can maximize the memory, but, the XPS 13 BIOS doesn't appear to have that option.

  • I've had same problem with my L321x on A06 Bios. After downgrading to A03 I have 3.8G of RAM, 256M is reserverd by graphics card.

    Something is broken, memory map for some RAM modules maybe. I have a theory that Dell changed RAM modules during the manufacture. Someday I will investigate this further and ask Dell to fix the damn thing, which will happen soon because my guarantee expires in two months ;)
