ACPI Errors on recent Precision 5510 BIOS

  • Some time ago I changed my old Precision m4600 to more recent model 5510 and I wonder about some ACPI errors I can see when booting my system (currently Fedora 25 tested with 4.9.11 and 4.10.1 using recent BIOS update 1.2.19)

Quick look at DSDT reveals that there is definitly something wrong with bios setup as for example H_EC is not defined anywhere and it's used in many places. Looking at bugzilla shows that this problem was reported for XPS 9350 (bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi and I wonder is it fixed there ? Same for XPS 9550 as this is almost the same setup as 5510.

This model is sold with Ubuntu and it's a bit weird to have this kind of problems.

  • Corrected link to kernel bugzilla: bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi

  • Same here. Very interested in seeing a BIOS update, as I now see with Linux Kernels 4.9+ boot hangs in ACPI on my 5510.

  • True ... no problems with boot hangs here, but it's not OK to see this kind of problems (I can see ppl complain all around the web in Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora forums) in not so cheap model sold with Linux.

  • I wonder can anyone from Dell reply in this matter ? I can understand the support for older models is limited, but first of all this is not a budget/cheap machine and it's definitely not old.

  • No change in recently released .21 BIOS update ... ech.

  • This seems to be a common error with all XPS/Precision laptops. Also getting this on XPS 15 with Bios 1.2.21 and Ubuntu's 4.8.0-46 kernel

  • I have a friend who has the same issues with an XPS 13 (9360) BIOS so im wondering how we can notice dell about this? Latetst update (XPS 15 9550, BIOS .21 still shows the ACPI errors even with the 4.10 kernel)

  • Wonder about same thing for some time. This machine (5510) is one of the best I use so far, but it drives me nuts than Dell sells them with linux installed and no one care to fix so stupid problem (if you look at dsdt/ssdt you will see what i mean).

It you take a look at this kernel bugzilla entry I posted you will see that it hits XPS 9350 as well.

  • Yeah, its just a faulty bios. Is there any way we can make Dell aware of this issue?

  • Good question. Normaly I would say they are already aware of this problem (this is hard to miss when you boot) but who konows. Lets hope someone from Dell read this forum and lat us know what should be done.

  • To top it all off, on the latest BIOS which is currently version 1.2.21, it seems that suspend functionality is broken. Try putting the machine to sleep and disconnecting AC power. For me, if AC power is removed, even momentarily, it'll boot from scratch instead of waking back into the previous state. This affects both Linux and Windows. Downgrading to version 1.2.19 fixes the issue. Then there is the issue related to the blank screen post sleep (en.community.dell.com/.../20941268, which thankfully, a workaround is incorporated in the Linux kernel since version 4.9. Bad ACPI tables, blank monitor post sleep, and now one that affects Windows very badly as well, broken resume from suspend when AC removed. What a mess.

  • I tired to post it also on Sputnik G+ channel, but no reply until now: plus.google.com/.../ayDxWbB3ZKA

Can we ask for any reaction from Dell ? I understand it can take some time time to process and fix some things but this is almost 1.5 year!!

  • God, and i thought HP was bad with support...

  • I recently noticed another ACPI related error:

    [85381.140719] ACPI Error: [\_SB_.PCI0.LPCB.H_EC.CHRG] Namespace lookup failure, AE_NOT_FOUND (20160422/psargs-359)

    [85381.140745] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed [\PNOT] (Node ffff95e46d0e0ed8), AE_NOT_FOUND (20160422/psparse-542)

    [85381.140758] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed [\_SB.AC._PSR] (Node ffff95e46d0f3ed8), AE_NOT_FOUND (20160422/psparse-542)

[85381.140825] ACPI Exception: AE_NOT_FOUND, Error reading AC Adapter state (20160422/ac-128)

The effect of this is that the lid close actions such as suspend on close do not work. I have to set the same action on both Battery and AC
