Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on Inspiron 15R - Strangeness with HD partitions?

Typically when I get these new machines in, I'll pull the hard drive out right away so I can make an image of it as it was from the factory, then either proceed to build up a new image based on factory load, or restore one of our existing images if applicable.

These 500GB Hitachi SATA drives in the 15R's are acting WEIRD though. Most of them can't be read via USB adapter or directly connected in my 32-bit machine (but some CAN!). It seems all can be read from various 64-bit machines. One wouldn't boot in the 15R right out of the box, even though it could be read by the 64-bit machines. I cleared all the partitions on that one, restored a know-good image to it, and the 15R still wouldn't boot from it! My gut tells me I need to dust off PTEdit and get in there and see what's happening at the byte level on the boot sector, but if anybody could shed any light that would be very helpful?

2 bootable partitions Windows 7 and Windows 8

hello ,
iv'e got 2 bootable partitions one with windows 7 and one with windows 8

before hand i had 2 bootable partitions with windows 7 installed on both , at
startup i could choose which partition to boot from .

this option is no longer displayed to me ,

and the partition with windows 8 is automatically booted from ,

any ideas why and how to set my system so it does ?

USB Port on Latitude 10 while docked

The documentation says that the USB port on the tablet is disabled when docked. I have to keep switching the mouse receiver back and forth between the dock and tablet and leave it in the dock sometimes when I take the tablet with me. Is there any way to enable the USB port on the tablet when it is docked?

I purchase a dell XPS|15z on April last year. Now I can Reboot the window - Either I try to get to F8 for safe mode there is no option to get in F8. I get F2 reset the reboot but I didn't work either, after window loading files the screen come up then the wheel fun over and over...couldn't get window start. Thanks

XPS 12 Win 8 Enterprise x64 recognizes only half HDD size

Hi,

just got some new XPS 12 with I have to set up using MS EA Win8 x64 Enterprise. Reinstalling it choosing legacy boot got me to already present partiton which I formated to one big partition (having Windows create it's system reserved). Now the formally 256GB SSD only shows a size of 118GB...

I finished installin Win8 Enterprise and installed all drivers thinking maybe some chipset driver will give me access to the missing space, but nothing worked. I changed some BIOS HHD settings for ATA support, but nithing helped (but I had to reinistall W8).

I was gonna try my luck with installing HDD drivers pre to Windows setup.

Any ideas what causes the loss of SSD space and, much more important, how to fix it?

Sir,

I just bought Dell Inspiron i5 and i want to make recovery disc and i go through ur forum where u said to go to recover media and select the medium i do the same but on the very last option "factory backup" it shows insert the blank disc and click start so i do but for more than half an hour the clock only rotating and start menu not flashed. I am attaching screenshot with it please help..

What steps/software are need to create/restore CURRENT image of drive?

Goal: Create a restorable image of my drive in it's current state using safe boot mode.

Image and image restore program would preferably reside on UEFI bootable media.

First choice would have been PING, always used it before and it never failed to restore images.

But the kernel isn't signed and it also cannot recognize/read the 'hidden' partitions.

Second choice was Windows 7 File Recovery, and although it is a fine programs it does

not create UEFI boot files onto the media. Therefore it is a two step solution to restoring a

blank HD back to the state it was in prior to a diskpart clean action.

1. Install OS from Dell Win 8 OEM DVD.

2.Run Windows 7 File Recovery from that installation.

Dell Backup and Restore seems to be out of the loop completely because the only bootable

image that it creates is simply a copy of the factory recovery partition. I already have that

tucked away on a 16GB Flash Drive.

Would it 'harm' the system to unhide those hidden UEFI partitions and run PING?

Is the dual-step Windows 7 File Recovery my only other option?

Dear Dell,

Its really a disappointment for me to have dell webcam issue. I tried everything and found nothing is working out. Finally i opt for Factory reset to sort out the problem.

but its still the same issue after factory reset.

My cam is not showing in Imaging device in device manager, I recently bought a laptop 4 months back. This is the second time i am having the same issue. first time I tried everything and nothing worked out and one day automatically it got started.

This time after factory reset, i am not able to see my Webcam in the Imaging device.

I have read the forum and found some information " Open device manager, you'll see a USB device with an exclamation at the bottom. Right click and uninstall it. Then click options and scan for new hardware. Windows should automatically install the webcam driver"

But I have nothing with exclamation mark in device manager.

I have perform following options:

1) uninstall webcam central, restart and Driver Installation from dell website for dell webcam central.

Installation carried out step by step with required Restart

2) Factory Reset

Please Resolve this issue, I am really frustrated to have such issues on regular interval.

i believe i dont have issues with hardware coz diagnostics didnt find any problems when i run it. I solved the issue on dell logo freezing. Last issue i am currently having trouble with is when i used win 8 to reset it and have a clean install it. My intel rapid storage seems to be ok coz in irst manager it has enhanced mode on. The problem is i continue to recieve an error message that my intel rapid START technology is dissabled. But in my bios it is enabled.

The question is. Do i have to reconfigure rapid storage again by making a partition or i just follow the steps in making a partition for rapid start? I believe its for hybernation. Hope someone can clarify this.

Secondly, what if i do a dell factory restore, will that save me the trouble of crating partitions for this? Does that recovery image contains correct settings for irst stuff? I remmember when i first turned on this laptop, i have no issues at all. I connected to the net and i found no error messages, until i shutdowned and when i openned it again, was stuck on dell logo. Resetting in windows was the first thing i did. And i solved the stuck logo thing but the rapid START is giving me a hard time researching. If dell factory image restore to factory settings can help me, i am gladly gonna give that a try first coz i believe if i restore using win 8 it is different that dells image restore???

I am running out of time on my warranty. I dont wanna return this laptop for exchage of other brands coz to me i think this is better than suny vayo... Cheers. Hope i can solve this. So others can too. For newbies like me. Thanks.

CAB Drivers E5530 ;Intel Chipset Apply Drivers SCCM Failing

Dell Driver issue

Over the past three days we have
put in an extensive amount of time in having troubles with the System Centre
Configuration Manager (SCCM) CAB file from the Dell website, the Dell latitude
E5530. When importing the entire CAB
file and running in the task sequence, the task sequence fails at the apply
driver with the following error message.

After an extensive amount of time
in breaking down the individual drivers, we have identified that the problem is

CPNKY_A00-00 Chipset Device Software;Intel Chipset Software Installation Utilitywith the driver

If we remove this from the task sequence then the applied drivers will work and the rest of the
installation will carry out successfully.
Is there any explanation why
this particular chipset will fail on the task sequence given that it is part of
the overall CAB file and is there any kind of indication or documentation that
we can use in the future so that such a significant amount of time is not
wasted in trying to diagnose the problem?

"Recovery Media" v "Rescue Disk"?

Just bought a new Inspiron 15 with Win 8. Two Qs about recovery please:

(1) I've created the "Recovery Media" on a USB stick. This seems to offer recovery in the event of failure of the hard disk. However the Dell software is also suggesting I create an external "Rescue Disk". How does that differ from the "Recovery Media" please?

(2) I read that some Inspirons have a hidden recovery partition. How please can I find out whether mine is one of them?

Recovery Media - issue with second disk

Hi,

I got a new DELL Inspiron laptop 3 days back. Trying to take backup of recovery media onto DVDs. First disk was burnt successfully and it prompted me to insert a new blank second disk. I did that, but the drive is pushing it back and tried multiple times , same result !!

Checked that the disk is completely new and working. I tried with multiple disks and facing the same issue. I cancelled the process and started it from scratch , this time also first DVD was successful and getting the same problem with second DVD.

Please help me on how to proceed with the recovery process.

Unable to bind Super to 'Show launcher' in Compiz

I'm very pleased with my Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition, but my only real gripe at the moment is that I'm unable to bind my Windows button, or Super on Ubuntu, to show the launcher.

So far I have installed the Compiz Settings Manager and when trying to configure the Show launcher shortcut in the Unity plugin I can bind it to Super, but about 2-3 seconds later it switches back to Disabled.

It also switches back if you try and capture the keys. The capture picks up the correct keys, but when you close the capture window it just swaps back to 'Disabled' again.

I've tried this by also clicking the <[x] button which resets the binding to default. This will temporarily set the binding to Super before swapping back to disabled after about .5 seconds.

Does anyone have any idea's why I can't bind this button? I have checked the Keyboard configuration and it looks like it's set okay to me, so this is even more confusing.

Win 2008 server R2 SP1 reinstallation

Hi everybody,

i have a power vault nx400 and i'm reinstalling OS using the original DVD provided with the hardware; it seems win 2008 unable to recognize disk's raid 5 configuration during installation, it ends up with alert "error 5004" and no options to load drivers in others ways. If i choose software controller S110 or new hardware controller PERC h710 nothing changes, win 2008 have the same behavior.

Any ideas?

Multiple "Windows Boot Manager" entries - Latitude 10 Tablet

I am using MDT 2012 to build our Latitude 10 tablets and the build process is fine except for one problem. Each time I rebuild another boot entry is added to the boot menu.

I have used diskpart to delete all partitions with override, followed by clean.

I then ran bcdedit which displayed "The boot configuration data store could not be opened", after this I assumed the entries would have gone - but they are still there.

Could anyone tell me what is causing these entries to be added each time?

A Problem With Dell Backup And Recovery In Dell Inspiron 15R

I just bought a new Dell inspiron 15R 5521 laptop , and i want to make factory backup.

I insert a USB flash and press "continue", but it keeps loading and when it recognizes the USB flash and i press "start" it prints out that there is a problem with Dell Backup and Recovery and i should restart the program !!

Web cam not working

I brought a dell 15R 5521 with windows 8 already install on 16 feb 2013.My service tag is <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> .

Its cam worked properly on that day but next day when i installed skype on it skype reported

no camera detected .Then i opened camera app from start menu and its showing black screen

with a messege "connect a camera". I then went to device manager to check there was nothing related to web cam. I cant find its driver also. Should i use Dell backup and recovery's recovery option to restore it to factory image. Will this solve my problem?

Also I cant find windows 8 product key on the basck of my laptop...
