A Discussion on Data Center Network Virtualization - As the compute and storage architectures are increasingly virtualized, today’s network architecture in the data center environment is becoming a major bottleneck to workload and operations agility. In contrast to the provisioning of virtual machines which can be accomplished in a matter of minutes, configurations changes to the data center networks need to go through careful validation and potential troubleshooting which often requires hours or even days to complete. Virtualizing the network, similar to virtualizing the computing and storage environments, is the new focal point of data center operations. Currently there are two major approaches towards data center network virtualization. One is based on the virtual networking framework implemented in the hypervisor environment and the other is based on the OpenFlow-based Software Defined Networking (SDN) framework. This session will provide an overview of the emerging architectures for data center network virtualization.
