Steps to setup Voice VLAN ports on Dell X Series switch……….
Edit STP port settings and make sure the port the phone is connected to has Spanning Tree Fast Link (portfast) enabled. Click OK to save to running configuration.
STP port settings should look similar to this after configuring Fast Link……………
Give the switch a System Name. This is a MUST for LLDP to work properly.
Set LLDP Port settings so that LLDP port state is TX&RX as well as all optional TLV’s and management address are advertised. Click OK to save to running configuration.
LLDP port settings should look similar to below when done editing…………
Create MED Network Policy. Application should be set to Voice, VLAN ID set as tagged as well as User Priority and DSCP Value set. In this case we used User Priority (CoS) 5 and DSCP 46 which is general best practice. Click OK to save to running configuration.
Edit MED port settings so that LLDP-MED is enabled. Make sure you add Network Policy and PoE-PSE to Tx Optional TLV’s. Also add the Network Policy you created (Policy 1). Click OK to save to running configuration.
After setting MED port settings it should look similar to below.
Edit the VLAN port settings so that the port the phone is connected to is set to general mode. The Voice VLAN ID should NOT be added to the port as tagged or untagged. Only set the native VLAN (PVID) for data traffic as untagged. Port settings should look similar to below. In this case we’re using VLAN ID 20 for Voice and you can see that it’s not added under the VLAN list. Click OK to save to running configuration.
Standard VLAN Dashboard should look similar to below.
Add your VoIP phone’s MAC OUI to the Voice VLAN OUI table. In this case we added the Polycom 310 below.
Set Voice VLAN state to Enabled. Enter Voice VLAN ID (VLAN 20 in this case) and class of service value same as LLDP-MED CoS value set in previous steps. In this case it’s set to 5 which is general best practice.
Set Voice VLAN port mode to auto.
Port settings should look similar to this after setting Voice VLAN to auto.
Save all changes to startup configuration once you’ve verified it’s working. Use Tools menu in top right corner of the switch WebUI as seen below.
