Working in HPC, I am often asked how to compute the theoretical performance of a potential system. Although this may be elementary for many of you, I thought I would take the time to document this and, maybe, in a subsequent writing explain the sustained performance numbers that go into the Top500 rankings - and why there is such a difference between theoretical and sustained.

In a previous blog, we discussed the coming of PetaFLOPS to the masses. In general, increased compute power at affordable prices is continuing to arrive each day. Along that path to increased compute power, there are a few bumps that need addressing. One is storage and the required I/O rates.

01-13-2010 -- The Next Decade Will Intertwine Most Science & Engineering Research with Supercomputing

My associate Dr. Otero commented on his blog “Like it or not, life science researchers at large need to recognize that their research is intertwined with supercomputing resources in one way or another.” I’d take that one step further than just life sciences and say that most science and engineering research is or is going to be intertwined with supercomputing.
