This paper provides a highly resilient Microsoft® Exchange 2013 storage solution for up to 12,500 mailboxes using the validated design described in this study. The solution includes a single Data Availability Group (DAG), and three copies of each database spanning two sites. Dell PowerEdge R730xd servers each connected to a Dell Storage MD1400 are used as the mailbox servers for the Exchange mailbox databases. The tested environment simulates up to 12,500 users with a mailbox profile of 5GB and 150 messages per day, or 0.121 IOPS for every user, including 20 percent headroom.

Dell PowerEdge R730xd is a 2-socket CPU, 2U, multi-purpose server, offering an excellent balance of an ultra-dense internal storage, redundancy and value in a compact form factor. This is the new, most suitable building block for any mid-size or large business. It delivers enormous storage capacity and IOPS performance in a dense 2U form-factor, enabling larger and more efficient databases and mail servers. Major features of the server/storage system include:

  • Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 product family
  • Dual processor sockets
  • With 24 slots, up to 768GB of Memory for RDIMMS and 1536GB for LRDIMMs
  • Up to 64TB Maximum Raw Internal Storage
  • Choice of chassis configuration with sixteen 3.5-inch LFF disk drives, twenty-four 2.5-inch SFF disk drives or eighteen 1.8-inch disk drives along with eight 3.5-inch LFF disk drives
  • Front loading drive bays plus two 2.5-inch SFF back-accessible drives
  • Integrated RAID support through PERC S130, H330, PERC H730, PERC H730P & External JBOD RAID support through PERC H830
  • Six PCIe 3.0 expansion slots
  • Choice of NIC technologies
  • Dell OpenManage™ Essentials and Dell Management Console, Dell OpenManage Power Center and Dell OpenManage Connections

The PowerEdge R730xd chassis configured with the 3.5-inch large form factor drives is used as part of this solution. For more information, see Dell PowerEdge R730xd Server product page.

The Dell Storage MD1400 direct-attached storage (DAS) enclosure with 12 Gb SAS throughput has been specifically engineered to work with the 13th generation of PowerEdge servers using the PowerEdge RAID Controller 9 (PERC9) 12 Gb SAS cards. Scaling capacity behind innovative next-generation servers enables end-to-end 12 Gb solutions with exceptional storage flexibility and IO performance for such applications as High-performance databases, Streaming digital media and Storage-intensive applications.

The Dell Storage MD1400 LFF drive enclosures are used as a part of this solution. For more information, see Dell Storage MD1400 product page.
