CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY ALIGN=64 to increase I/O performance

  • I would like to run "CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY ALIGN=64" to increase I/O performance on our SQL Server 2008 Enterprise production servers, and currently the partition is set to only 1024 for our Dell EqualLogic PS6000XV SAN.

What has been your experience with this setting (64), i.e., have you noticed a material increase in performance as others have?

    Thank you.
  • Sorry, I meant to say “set to 1024”, not “set to only 1024”

  • Mike,

Hi, I'm Joe with Dell EqualLogic. Here are two links that should answer your questions (some reading required). In short, yes, for optimal performance when working with PS Series group volumes accessed by Windows hosts, it is recommended that you configure disk partitions to begin on sector boundaries that are divisible by 64K (that is, evenly divisible by 65536 bytes or 128 sectors), matching the default PS Series storage array RAID stripe segment size.

Let me know if you have any other questions after you reviewed the documents.
