erson Where's the webcast?
Tony_Coffman www.visualwebcaster.com/event.asp?id=56745
erson Thanks, Tony_coffman
Nik_Simpson I'm seeing the slides, but not getting any audio
erson I'm watching it, works fine here
Nik_Simpson The Windows Media Player connects fine, but doesn't do anything, is there a dial-in number we can use for audio?
erson I'm using the Media Player here, working fine
erson Where was the information about how to find this webcast?
Dell-RogerF Afternoon everyone
Dell_PascalN Hello Everyone! Thanks for joining the Dell Management Console chat.
Dell_PascalN For those who are just getting familiar with Dell Management Console, here's a quick description of the product: Dell Management Console is Dell’s next-generation systems management software. Dell Management Console replaces and has significant enhancements over Dell OpenManage IT Assistant. It is free and provides features such as configurable dashboards, graphical reports, role-based security, hierarchical software deployment, management information base (MIB) import for management of events from non-Dell devices, one-to-many hardware configuration wizards, and greater scalability through a remote database infrastructure.
Dell-RogerF Hey Pascal, how about some introductions?
erson Dell_pascaln, will this chat only be about DMC?
Dell_PascalN By the way, my name is Pascal Nicolas, and I'm the Dell Product Marketing Manager for Dell Management Console. We also have several of the engineers from both Dell and Symantec in the room. Please feel free to ask questions.
Dell-Roopa Hi, I am Roopa, Product Manager for Lifecycle Controller. The Lifecycle Controller is the engine for advanced embedded management and is delivered as part of iDRAC Express in the new generation Dell servers. It includes a 1 GB managed and persisted storage that embeds systems management features in addition to the iDRAC features. It eliminates the media-based systems management tools/utilities for managing Dell systems.
Dell_PascalN Hi Erson, we also have Roopa online who can talk about other great new features we're launching today.
erson Great
erson This chat was announced to start 12:30, right?
Dell_PascalN Have any of you had a chance to play with the Dell Management Console yet? Any input so far? Please feel free to give us feedback today or through this community: www.delltechcenter.com/page/dell+management+console
Tony_Coffman Downloading it now; will be trying it asap
Dell_PascalN 12:30 Central is correct, and we'll go until 2:00 PM. So we're a little early, but it seems that several people have already joined, so we're here to answer questions.
erson Downloaded it earlier today; 18:00 here in Sweden so will try it tomorrow
Tony_Coffman What sort of database requirement is there for DMC?
erson SQL Server Express or higher—2005
Dell_PascalN Great response, Erson. We bundle the product with SQL Express 2005 but we also support full SQL Server.
erson Any chance of support for SQL 2008? Or rather, is the support far in the future or near?
Dell_PascalN One the great enhancements for scalability is that the database can now be on a remote server
erson That's great
Dell-RobNadine We're looking at it for future support
Tony_Coffman Is there any issue with running DMC in a VM?
Dell_PascalN We're looking at SQL Server 2008 and Longhorn support for one year from now
Dell-RobNadine We don't recommend running DMC in a VM
Dell-RobNadine It's not supported for 1.0.
Hickus With the new deployment, how much space does it take up on the hard drive? Can it be deleted?
erson The requirements highly recommend two physical CPUs; could that be translated to dual core? Or do you really need two physical CPU packages?
Dell-Roopa Hickus, are you asking about Lifecycle Controller?
Dell-RobNadine Yeah, it gets kind of slow without two CPUs
Hickus Yes. The auto deployment without any media in the box
Dell-Roopa Lifecycle Controller is embedded storage and not on the hard drive
Dell_PascalN Tony, by the way, even though VM is not supported in 1.0 (seems to be various database issues, etc.), that is one of our main priorities for the upcoming releases
erson But 2x dual core isn't any advantage to 1x quad core?
Dell-Roopa It can be enabled/disabled from BIOS
Hickus Thank you! Exactly what I needed!
Tony_Coffman Dell_pascaln, thanks. We are highly virtualized so VM is incredibly important to us
Dell-Roopa Sure Hickus. You are welcome
Dell-RobNadine Our testing indicates two physical processors provide significant speed benefits
Dell_PascalN Understood. It's within our top five priorities for the next releases
erson Only supporting 2003 is a shame though, Windows 2003 that is
Dell-RobNadine True 2008 is for early next year
Dell-RobNadine Erson, have you fully transitioned to 2008 in your environment?
erson Almost, was hoping to get rid of the last Windows 2003 within six months
Dell-RobNadine Understood
erson We’re a pretty small ISV though, so it's not that hard
Tony_Coffman What sort of features are not available on non-11g servers? In other words, what are we missing out on? :-)
erson Great question :)
MSDELL What kind of storage management features are there in the DMC?
Dell_PascalN Tony, For Dell Management Console, we support 6g to 11g servers
erson iDRAC Express, what 11g servers have that?
Dell-Roopa Lifecycle Controller is available on 11g platforms only
Dell_PascalN DMC supports discovery, inventory, and monitoring of Dell EMC and PowerVault MD arrays
erson EqualLogic support on the way?
Dell_PascalN We have a white paper to explain how to integrate EqualLogic support. It will be bundled in the product in the next release.
Dell-Roopa Tony, did I answer your question?
MSDELL What inventory information is gathered on EMC and MD Arrays?
Tony_Coffman Yes, thanks
gthomas Will I be able to integrate other products such as Mrtg into the management product?
Tony_Coffman I'll read up on Lifecycle Controller; I think I understand the concept but until I get one racked you never truly "get it"
Dell-RobNadine For EMC and MD arrays: Flare/firmware versions, all the discs serial numbers, size of disks, logical disks...
Dell-Roopa Sure Tony. For older systems, you will need media for systems management
Dell_PascalN Also, DMC does support non-Dell devices for complete heterogeneous monitoring; we want to provide a single pane of glass for IT management. Therefore, if a customer has a Hitachi array, they can receive events from DMC instead of using another tool
Dell-RobNadine ...model number
Dell-Roopa Sure Tony, feel free to write to me when you have some comment/feedback: roopa_nagaraj@dell.com
MSDELL Can we run a report to see how much space is available on our arrays with DMC?
Dell-RobNadine Yes, we can
erson Where can I read up on the Lifecycle Controller?
Dell-Roopa White papers will be available on the Dell Web site, and the Lifecycle Controller user’s guide will be on the support Web site too
erson There is no DRAC 6 then?
MSDELL Pascal, for non-Dell devices can you only monitor them? Any discovery or inventory capabilities?
Dell-Roopa iDRAC 6 will be there too
Dell-Roopa Lifecycle Controller is integrated with iDRAC 6 Express
erson What's the difference between iDRAC 6 and iDRAC Express? Or is that the same?
Dell-Roopa iDRAC 6 is a branding name, and it will be sold in two parts: iDRAC 6 Express and iDRAC 6 Enterprise
Dell-Roopa Lifecycle Controller is the embedded systems management offered with iDRAC 6 Express
erson Are both Express and Enterprise optional?
Dell_PascalN Msdell, yes you can discover and monitor events on non-Dell devices with the no-cost DMC product that ships with Dell devices. We also have a trial version of the fee-based Server Management Suite for full heterogeneous inventory and monitoring
Dell-Roopa Express is the default on the 11g launch platforms
MSDELL Thanks, how many devices will the DMC support?
erson Difference between Express and Enterprise iDRAC 6?
Dell-Roopa iDRAC Enterprise is an upsell and it will have dedicated management port, virtual media, virtual keyboard, video, mouse (vKVM)
Dell_PascalN We have tested DMC with up to 3,000 devices
erson The requirements had numbers for up to 5,000 devices if I remember correctly
MSDELL So is 3,000 the maximum then?
Dell-Roopa iDRAC 6 Express is offered as an upgrade on 200–500 series servers and is standard on the 600–900 series. iDRAC 6 is a physical riser card that needs to be added to the server. iDRAC 6 Express offers many remote management features such as an out-of-band Web GUI, advanced security features, several remote management features, power management, and sensor monitoring and alerting
Dell-Roopa iDRAC 6 Enterprise is offered as an upgrade on 200–900 series servers and is standard on blade servers. iDRAC 6 provides additional out-of-band features including virtual console, virtual media, and a dedicated NIC. iDRAC 6 Enterprise is a physical riser card that provides two additional ports on the back of the server: a RJ-45 network port and an SD slot (for VFlash media)
Dell_PascalN We have done a full scalability testing with 3,000 devices; however, it is possible to manage more devices depending on the number of attributes being monitored and how often they are monitored
Dell_PascalN Also, the new Symantec Management Platform allows for a tiered infrastructure currently used for deployment of hardware updates from a single console. Therefore, a customer could have multiple branches that each manage thousands of devices and report status back to the central console
erson Dell-roopa, great information. Can we expect to get the Enterprise iDRAC 6 at about the price of the DRAC 5?
Dell-RobNadine FYI: The Dell Management Console community Web site with some white papers and video demos is here: http://en.community.dell.com/groups/dell_management_console/default.aspx
erson Webcast went silent here
Dell-Roopa Price varies per geography. Please work with your sales contact for the pricing information
erson Do you guys have any information when the 11g will be available for purchase in Europe?
Armando75 March 30 for all regions
Dell_PascalN Welcome to all new folks. We had started a little early with some early birds. We'll allow a couple more minutes for the newcomers and start with introductions
erson Looking forward to any white paper or so about the iDRAC
erson Record crowd in here maybe?
wsellers Is this just a chat "thing"? Or a video stream also?
erson Has the webcast ended?
Dell_PascalN We're just doing a chat today
Dell-RogerF For those just joining, you can catch up by clicking Actions, Recent Room History in the upper-left of the chat widget
erson Seems to have ended
Armando75 The webcast is over
wsellers <-- is installing Dell DMC after lunch...
Dell_PascalN Actually Erson, we're just getting started. Since official start time was 12:30, we're just giving all the newcomers some time and then we'll make introductions in a minute
apesant_Dell The webcast feed has ended, it will be archived on DELL.COM/Switch later today
Dell-RobNadine Wsellers: awesome :)
erson Dell_pascaln: I was talking about the webcast; no, this is an awesome chat session
KathleenWalker_dell Erson, we have two white papers on the iDRAC 6/Lifecycle Controller, and a Dell Power Solutions article that will be posted on the Web.
Dell_PascalN Hello to all newcomers. Welcome to the Dell 11g Launch chat. My name is Pascal Nicolas, and I'm the Product Manager for the Dell Management Console. Please feel free to start asking questions
dlocsin This is Dylan Locsin, representing the EqualLogic line for Dell. I'll be in the EqualLogic room to answer any questions about Dell storage today
Dell-RobNadine Rob Cox here, lead engineer for the product, and Nadine, another developer
Dell-Roopa Hello and welcome to the newcomers on this chat. I am Roopa, Product Marketing Manager for Lifecycle Controller. Please feel free to ask Lifecycle Controller questions
erson /Me splits himself in two and joins both rooms
Dell-RobNadine I like the IRCspeak.
erson Old habits die hard...
wsellers I work at a commercial data center here in Baton Rouge. Will DMC support multiple customers/tenants? So that only customer A sees only customer A's servers?
Dell_PascalN Yes, DMC has a role-based-security feature, and you can define who you want to see which devices
wsellers Thanks
dammmifino Is Windows 2008 supported?
wsellers Don’t think it's supported yet
Armando75 Yes
wsellers Not "officially"
Dell-RobNadine You have to install it on a Windows 2003 box, but it manages Windows 2008 boxes
Dell-RobNadine For DMC
dammmifino When can we install on Windows 2008? Timeline?
apesant_Dell left.
Dell-RobNadine Early next year hopefully
Dell-Roopa Windows 2008 is supported on 11g systems; clarifying Armando's response
Armando75 On servers
wsellers What ports do you need to open on firewall(s) to allow DMC to manage remote hosts?
Dell_PascalN It depends on what protocol, SNMP is port 161
wsellers Ah okay, so just SNMP?
Dell_PascalN Also, firmware updates through DMC require an agent that talks through HTTP or HTTPS
erson Can you give some more explanation about the difference between the Lifecycle Controller and the iDRAC express? What parts belongs to which product?
Dell-Ross We support many protocols to monitor and manage nodes—SNMP is one
Dell-Roopa Lifecycle Controller is the managed persistent storage within iDRAC 6 Express that will be used for systems management
Dell_PascalN DMC also supports IPMI for agent-less discovery, inventory, and monitoring
wsellers I found this very helpful: http://en.community.dell.com/groups/dell_management_console/media/default.aspx
Dell-Roopa Unified Server Configurator is the local user interface resident on Lifecycle Controller that you can use for one-to-one OS install, RAID configuration and perform diagnostics
Dell-Ross Depending on the protocol you use, a certain number of ports need to be opened to the monitored device. There is just one port (HTTP) to the DMC services from the UI
Dell_PascalN DMC also gathers some information through WMI; for example, CPU utilization, memory utilization, free disk space, and I/O
Dell-RobNadine Thanks, wsellers :)
Dell-Roopa Erson, Did I answer your question?
erson Dell-roopa, yes
Dell-Roopa Thanks, erson
erson I'm assuming that the iDRAC 6 Enterprise just bolts on top of the iDRAC 6 Express and Lifecycle Controller and adds the NIC for vKVM, virtual media
Dell_PascalN We also want to point out that there are three getting started videos on the Dell Management Console DVD and several more on the community Web site that wsellers mentioned above
Dell-Roopa You got it right, erson
erson What is the SD slot for VFlash media used for?
Fred_Lassiter Is anyone else having a problem playing the webcast?
Dell-Roopa VFlash media is an add-on card upsell on iDRAC Enterprise
erson I'm also assuming that updates will be released for the software stored inside the 1 GB persistent Lifecycle storage?
erson Fred, the webcast is over
dlocsin Hi, I'm Dylan Locsin, representing Dell storage today and covering the EqualLogic line. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help answer them. We're having a little difficulty with the other room, so please pose any questions here. Thanks
Dell-Roopa From iDRAC UI, you will be able to use 256 MB of the VFlash media for virtual flash feature
erson Fred, it will be posted on DELL.COM/Switch later
Fred_Lassiter Okay, can it be replayed anywhere? Thanks
erson Dlocsin, what RAID levels will the PS6000 series support?
Dell-RobNadine Erson, do you mind sharing what kind of environment you have?
dlocsin The PS6000 line supports RAID-5, -6, -10, and -50
Dell_PascalN All, we're trying to encourage customers as well as internal folks at Dell to create their own reports and share them with the community. We already have reports inside the product such as servers by model number (pie chart), servers by OS (pie chart), hard drive firmware (table, exportable to .csv files), etc. Any other useful report we (or the community) could create? Please submit ideas
dlocsin Those RAID levels apply for all EqualLogic models with the latest firmware, including the new models: PS6000e, PS6000x, PS6000xv, PS6000s and PS6500e
Dell_PascalN Also, we're creating a script center on Dell TechCenter and should have that up in a couple of days. We're looking forward to your contributions
erson Small ISV in Sweden, Microsoft Gold partner, ~25 physical servers, mostly using pretty much any Microsoft software, but we also have some HP-UX and Novell sales-based servers
wlambert_2001 left.
Dell-RobNadine That's a great environment that would be perfect for DMC :)
Dell-Roopa Erson, do you use Microsoft SCCM?
erson Dell-roopa: SCE right now, expecting to start trying out the last SCCM in the lab soon-ish
Dell-Roopa Okay, guess you are aware of our management packs to manage Dell systems from SCE
erson Yes
erson Dell-roopa, I'm still a bit puzzled about the virtual Flash—what can I use it for?
wlambert_2001 Can anyone get me in contact with a person in the DCS group named Todd Brannon?
Dell-Roopa Erson, you will be able to copy a service image on VFlash and boot off it
erson Neat
Dell-Roopa It will be available independent of the OS
Dell_PascalN By the way, Dell Management Console can be downloaded at www.dell.com/openmanage/register. Customers will be asked to write a few pieces of information about their organizations to get a free license key before download
Dell-RobNadine ::coffee
erson Are there any more servers than PowerEdge R710 and PowerEdge R610 released today?
Dell_PascalN Hello Lambert_2001, unfortunately I don't know Todd Brannon, but our key contact at Dell Consulting Services is Tony Merrit, and he will be happy to discuss the implementation services we have for the Dell Management Console
KathleenWalker_dell PowerEdge T610, PowerEdge M610, PowerEdge M710 also launched today. Also M Series are blades and T are towers
erson Hi Kathleenwalker_dell
erson PowerEdge M610 and M710 mimics the memory and CPU setups on the PowerEdge R610 and R710?
erson Dlocsin, will this mean the end for EqualLogic PS5000?
KathleenWalker_dell Correct. The PowerEdge M610 and PowerEdge R610 have remarkably similar features. You choose the form factor (modular or rack mount) and you get the same features
Pankaj_Bishnoi left.
dlocsin Erson, yes the PS6000 will replace the PS5000
tonyhgras Are the new servers the first of the 11g family?
dlocsin All of the EqualLogic arrays can work together though, regardless of hardware generation, so long as they are using compatible versions of firmware
erson Tonyghras, yes
KathleenWalker_dell Yes, the five servers launching today are the first of the 11g servers
tonyhgras Where were they announced?
erson Today
KathleenWalker_dell Tonygras, media events were in San Francisco and London today
tonyhgras Can you make a brief summary of the new features? Main differences with the previous generation
KathleenWalker_dell Try www.dell.com/poweredge; it will give you all of the information and specs and more than I can type here
tonyhgras Fine, thanks
KathleenWalker_dell Generally speaking though we've enhanced the management, fine-tuned the design, and worked to add more features such as DIMM slots and other needed specs
wlambert_2001 Hi Dell_pascaln, thought DCS stood for Data Center Solutions group. I know this is not the venue, but have been hitting walls with SMB/Premier. We are setting up datacentermarketplace.com, have a relationship with the SMB group, want a close relationship with Data Center and Large Computing groups. In addition to Dell's participation in The Data Center Marketplace selling its products and services, would like Dell's technical expertise to participate in events, webinars, live tradeshows, etc., such as we are sponsoring for 3/31 - Future of the Dynamic Data Center Summit. Can see what I'm talking about on www.datacentermarketplace.com. Can you hook me up with parties at Dell that can create relationships with us to drive product and community?
erson Nehalem CPU generation, FSB is dead; replaced with QPI (~=hypertransport), DDR3 ECC/REG, four NICs
davidgraves_dell Hi all, just a quick administrative note: we will be ending the chat session at 1:15 PM CDT. Thanks to all who have participated
dammmifino I think the biggest challenge for most folks will be the memory configuration, which is drastically different from previous versions and will impact performance if not done correctly
erson Memory controller in the CPU
erson Dammmifino, you mean that fully populated the speed is lowered?
dammmifino Yes
erson Anyone interested in that can check out the table here: www.intel.com/technology/memory/ddr/valid/ddr3_udimm_rdimm_results.htm
dammmifino Seems like optimum configurations will be by six, such as 6, 12, 18 versus 2, 4, 8, and 16 as we typically do
tonyhgras Memory will be plain DDR3 or FBDS?
chadfenner The biggest catch with memory is that there are more options than ever before and different speeds depending on the processor you choose. For example, the high-speed processors can run memory up to 1,333 MHz but others can't
dammmifino RDIMM and UDIMM
chadfenner The Intel table Erson provided should really help. We'll support both RDIMMs and UDIMMs
chadfenner Dell will support that is. :)
chadfenner DDR3 only. No FBD anymore?
erson Tonyhgras, DDR3 ECC/REG, FBDIMM2 will only be used on Nehalem-ex (7000 Series Xeon MP)
chadfenner Correct. No FBD for Nehalem EP processors
erson Does Dell support UDIMM at all?
tonyhgras And the memory controller is embedded in the processor, right?
erson Yes
tonyhgras Any improvement in the storage field?
chadfenner Dell does support UDIMMs on these new servers
erson 8 GB is the largest memory module available at launch? RDIMM that is?
chadfenner 8 GB DIMM will be the largest at launch. Larger than that are not available yet
erson Read something about that, Samsung had 16 GB UDIMM now and 16 GB was being developed. What’s the maximum memory that the CPU can handle? 18 x 16 GB?
chadfenner Correct. Not saying it doesn't exist at all, just not that it exists in volume yet. Good clarification though
dlocsin Hi tonyhgras, yes, there were a number of improvements in Dell storage today, particularly the launch of the Dell EqualLogic PS Series and the availability of the Dell Nx4.
dlocsin http://content.dell.com/us/en/corp/d/press-releases/2009-03-25-01-ps6000.aspx is the press release
dlocsin Here is a blog and video recapping a number of the improvements:
http://en.community.dell.com/blogs/insideit/archive/2009/03/25/introducing-the-dell-equallogic-ps6000-series-amp-availability-of-the-dell-nx4.aspx
tonyhgras Thanks, dlocsin
tonyhgras And what about inside the new servers storage subsystem?
dlocsin If you have any questions, you can post a comment or thread on the Storage or EqualLogic TechCenter areas on the left
erson Tonyhgras, good question. Is there a new PERC generation as well?
onstream As a reminder, this chat will end at 1:30 CDT, 11:30 PDT.
Dell_PascalN Or www.delltechcenter.com/page/dell+management+console
erson SAS 2.0 should be around the corner
tonyhgras The previous generation change brought new technologies in the server´s storage
dlocsin The storage announcements today were specific to networked storage offerings (iSCSI SAN and unified storage/NAS), but I'll let the server folks in the room address any questions on internal storage on the new PowerEdge servers
chadfenner Tonyhgras, new servers will have updated SATA, SAS, and SSD drives, a new persistent storage SD card for virtualization integration and enhanced RAID cards
Dell-RogerF Thanks to everyone who has joined us today. The chat room will remain open but a couple of reminders as we "officially" close. For continuing discussion on the Dell Management Console, go to http://en.community.dell.com/groups/dell_management_console/default.aspx. And, the transcript of today's chat will be posted tomorrow at www.delltechcenter.com/page/03-24-09+dell+enterprise+launch.
chadfenner Plus, new, easier to use hard drive carriers
dlocsin For more on the Nx4, see: www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/storage-powervault-nx4?c=us&l=en&s=bsd
dlocsin For more on the EqualLogic line, see: DELL.COM/PSSeries
tonyhgras Thanks, chadfenner
erson Chadfenner, enhanced RAID cards = RAID-6 available now?
tonyhgras Erson: you mean in the embedded controller?
chadfenner RAID-6 is now available I believe. Need to go confirm. I'm blanking on that one
erson No, on the PERC I believe. The onboard controller probably doesn't have such fancy features
tonyhgras Wasn´t this R6 feature already available?
tonyhgras On the PERC 6i/6E?
erson Hmm, yes, I believe you are correct
erson Are there any more short URLs like the DELL.COM/PowerEdge and DELL.COM/PSSeries that takes you right to the new stuff?
chadfenner It was available correct. I think that's why I was blanking there
tonyhgras So, in summary, we will not see major changes in the server storage subsystem
chadfenner Those are the two major URLs
erson You know, guys, I kind of miss Dell-Scotth :)
tonyhgras What happens to him?
chadfenner Correct on the server subsystem right now. More updates to come over time
tonyhgras Anyway, there´s a lot of new stuff on the new family
Dell-Roopa Erson, Scott is on vacation
erson Not sure those goons have kidnapped him after he said too much in my thread on Dell TechCenter about the R610/710? ::blush
Dell-RobNadine left.
tonyhgras The chat session has been very good today
erson Jpowell is also missing
erson Tonyhgras, sure has
erson I'm looking forward to the Nehalem chat next time
tonyhgras Good information from the Dell guys, and the rest, especially erson
dlocsin Thanks everyone. -dylan from Dell Storage
erson /Me takes a bow
tonyhgras I have to leave, thanks to all of you
erson Bye
onstream Thank you!
Dell-Roopa Thanks, Tonyhgras
tonyhgras See you, have a nice day
erson One question that I forgot to ask was 10 GB iSCSI support on the PS6000. Anyone still here that knows anything about that?
erson 4x1 GB doesn't seem much with an EqualLogic PS6000S filled with SSDs
jonathanatdell SSD MB/second throughput is actually very similar to standard SATA/SAS throughput. Where SSD excels is actually in I/OPS
erson For sure
erson Hmm, I wonder that the brand of those 50 GB SSDs is? Ah well, nearly 20:00 here in Sweden, time for something to eat. Great chat everyone, hope to see you next time
