This allows a user to monitor all systems managed by OpenManage Essentials such as DELL Servers, Storage, Networking, and Firewall appliances and any other supported third party appliance from your android mobile device.

OpenManage Mobile can also connect to a server directly through the iDRAC interface. Once connected, a user can perform several basic management functions directly on the server.

Key Features of OpenManage Mobile –

    • Connect to multiple OME servers from a single mobile device
    • Connect to multiple 12G servers individually through the iDRAC interface
    • Receive critical alert notification on your mobile device as they arrive into your OpenManage Essentials management console
    • Acknowledge, forward, and delete alerts from your mobile device
    • Browse through device details, firmware inventory, and event logs of individual systems
    • Perform several server management functions such as Power On, Power cycle, Reboot, and shutdown from the mobile application

  • TechChat: iDRAC Enterprise out-of-band remote desktop.

One of the primary drivers of iDRAC Enterprise is the out-of-band remote desktop (virtual console).  Because iDRAC is the video controller for the server, it has visibility into the frame buffer at all times and remote desktop can be viewed in pre-boot environments.

Introduction of a VNC server in iDRAC will address the customer needs to  use a standard and open VNC client to view their remote desktop.  Customers will be able to view the remote desktop with several clients both mobile and desktop.

You can use a standard open VNC client to manage the remote server using both desktop and mobile devices such as Dell Wyse PocketCloud. When servers in data centers stop functioning, the iDRAC or the operating system sends an alert to the console on the management station. The console sends an email or SMS to a mobile device with required information and launches VNC viewer application on the management station. This VNC viewer can connect to OS/Hypervisor on the server and provide access to keyboard, video and mouse of the host server to perform the necessary remediation. Before launching the VNC client, you must enable the VNC server and configure the VNC server settings in iDRAC such as password, VNC port number, SSL encryption, and the time out value.

Learn this and more tomorrow February 18th, 2014 at 3:00 PM Central Time for a TechChat on new ways to connect and manager your Dell PowerEdge servers with iDRAC Enterprise.  Come chat with us about the new VNC server inside of iDRAC that will let customers use a standard and open VNC client to view into their remote desktop.

  • TechChat: The new Kace K2000

K2000 makes large scale imaging and windows migration a snap with new, more powerful task engine and multicasting

Large scale systems imaging is a complicated process and can be very time consuming for you, the IT administrator.  You have to consider a number of factors – from managing large numbers of images with increasingly complex configurations and large application portfolios to ensuring images are deployed to remote locations with minimum IT support.  Multiple hardware and operating system platforms and the increasing acceptance of BYOD in the workplace makes the job even harder.  And, you have to keep your end users satisfied – they become very unhappy if their data and settings are not migrated to their new machines or their new operating systems with no disruption to their work day.

This all adds to the day to day stress of an IT administrator’s job.  The impending end of support for Windows XP has made things even more stressful for the organizations who have not completed their migrations from Windows XP to 7 or 8.

Dell KACE K2000 Systems Deployment Appliance makes it easier for you to meet your systems deployment and OS imaging needs.  K2000 focuses on breaking down static imaging into its components so that you can create a few, or even a single, thin master image that is hardware agnostic and add on layers on top for things like hardware drivers, applications user states and data.  K2000 is architected as an appliance, either actual or virtual, so that it is easy to deploy, up and running in less than a week for majority of customers, and easy to operate.  The latest release of K2000 v3.6, released on January 15, 2014, is focused on making large scale deployments faster, more efficient and more reliable, and introduced two new major capabilities to the appliance.

First is multicast deployment.  Multicast enables K2000 to send the same imaging data bits once through the network pipe and have more than one system (typically 20-250) receive the image.  This greatly speeds up large scale deployments and, at the same time, reduced bandwidth usage.

The second major capability added in v3.6 is a new, powerful task engine.  The task engine is tightly integrated with multicasting deployment and provides for real time, two-way communications between the K2000 appliance and the devices that are being deployed or imaged.  The result is real time feedback on each deployment task for each device as well as much better handling of deployment tasks, such as multiple reboots.  The task engine also provides superior task automation for scheduling of pre and post deployment tasks, such as disk de-encryption prior to installation of a new OS, and deployment of applications post-image install.  Finally, the task engine provides centralized logging of all deployment tasks from the K2000 web console for easier and more effective trouble shooting.  Combined, these new capabilities of the K2000 can help you perform true “lights off” deployment – schedule an entire computer lab to be reimaged overnight, and come in the next morning with the job done.  No impact to end users and no loss of sleep for you.

With the addition of the new task engine and multicasting, K2000 is faster, more reliable, uses less bandwidth, and helps you trouble shoot more efficiently.  These added capabilities help you do your job easier and move the K2000 to the front of the line when it comes to systems deployment and imaging solutions.

  • TechChat: OS Deployments through Dell's Lifecycle Controller

Join us this coming Tuesday for a TechChat around using the Dell Lifecycle controller to deploy OS images. Learn, share, compare and comment with peers and experts in the industry Tuesday January 21, 2014 at 3:00 PM Central Time.

Lifecycle Controller reduces the time and number of steps taken to accomplish tasks, reduces potential for error, enhances server and application uptime and security, and results in more efficient IT management. Developed on the industry standard Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) platform and Web Services for Management (WSMan) interfaces, Lifecycle Controller provides an open environment for console integration that also allows for custom scripting for Lifecycle Controller. Leading systems management consoles (e.g., Microsoft® System Center Configuration Manager, BMC Software BladeLogic® Operations Manager, Symantec™ Deployment Solution, Dell™ Management Console) have integrated Dell Lifecycle Controller, thus offering its features and capabilities to existing infrastructures where those consoles are installed.

  • TechChat: Agent-free Storage Monitoring using iDRAC

Join us this coming Tuesday for a TechChat around Agent-free Storage Monitoring using iDRAC. Learn, share, compare and comment with peers and experts in the industry Tuesday November 19, 2013 at 3:00 PM Central Time.

Agent-free monitoring is the state-of-the-art out-of-band manageability solution for Dell’s 12G servers. Until then, inventory/monitoring of the server-attached storage was performed in-band, that is using software agents installed on the system. Software agents include Dell OpenManage Server Administrator or vendor-provided tools running on the operating system.

In Dell PowerEdge 12th generation servers, one can inventory/monitor the storage attached to the server (e.g. PERCs, hard disks, enclosures etc.) using iDRAC7 without installing any agent on the managed system or management station. Agent-free monitoring is the systems management solution for Dell’s 12th generation servers. It is completely out-of-band with no dependence on any operating system agents. Some of the benefits of agent-free monitoring include – releasing CPU cycles used for storage monitoring by the agents, its fully OS-agnostic and available during pre-boot also.
