How do I configure Asynchronous Standard Remote Replication between PowerVault Primary and
Secondary Storage Array?

Asynchronous standard remote replication is intended to operate in configurations with relatively high-latency and/or low-bandwidth communication links. This method decouples primary-side virtual disk performance from link performance, and therefore enables the use of lower cost links.

In general,the database applications data is spread across multiple virtual disks and hence, it is very important that all virtual disks related to that application are replicated to the secondary site in a way that makes group-level recoverability possible.

Dell PowerVault replication consistency group for consistent data synchronization of the primary virtual disk and secondary virtual disk is referred to as remote replication group and a remote replication pair.

The prerequisites for asynchronous standard remote replication are

  • Ensure both the storage arrays should  have the firmware version 7.84.44.60 or above.
  • The standard remote replication premium feature must be enabled and activated on the local and remote storage array.
  • The local and remote storage arrays  must be connected through a proper Fibre Channel fabric or iSCSI interface.
  • Test the communication link between the primary and secondary storage array.
  • The remote storage array must contain a virtual disk that has a capacity that is greater than or equal to the capacity of the replicated virtual disk that is to be used as the primary virtual disk on the local storage array.
  • Create Remote Replication Group
  • Create Replicated Pair.

Enable and Activate Standard Remote Replication

To enable the standard remote replication, obtain the remote replication keys from the customer support and apply the saved key file.

To activate standard remote replication, navigate to the Copy Services tab in Array Management and select Remote Replication and then select Activate.

In the Select Replication Feature window select Remote Replication and then click Next.

In the Create Repositories (Activate Replication) window select Free capacity on the existing disk pool or disk group then select the disk pool name and then click Finish.

Create Remote Replication Group

A remote replication group is a container that can house several replicated pairs, which is comprised of two virtual disks, a primary virtual disk and a secondary virtual disk. It is associated with a local storage array and remote storage array virtual disks having similar synchronization settings.

In the PowerVault MD Storage Manager (Array Management) click Copy Services and select Remote
Replication
and Remote Replication Group and select Create to create the remote replication group.

Then wait for the initialization to happen for the remote replication group before creating the remote replicated pair.

Test Communication Link

To test the Communication link between the Primary and Secondary storage arrays navigate to the created Remote Replication Group and then right-click on that group and select the Test Communication Link

In the Test Communication Link window click Start and observe the progress of the communication link and then check all the tests have passed

Create Remote Replicated Pair

A remote replicated pair is comprised of two virtual disks, a primary virtual disk and a secondary virtual disk, that contain identical copies of the same data. The replicated pair is a part of a remote replication group, which allows the replicated pair to synchronize at the same time as any replicated pairs within the replication group.

Create the remote replication pair for each virtual disk that has to be replicated. To create a replicated pair using the new replication group click Yes in the Replication Group Created.

In the Select Primary Virtual Disk window for Create Remote Replicated Pair select An existing virtual disk and then select the virtual disk that has to be replicated and then Click Next.

In the Select Repository window choose the repository selection method select Automatic (Recommended) and then Click Finish.

Select OK to complete the remote replicated pair on the local storage array. Before the replication is started you must complete the associated tasks on the Remote storage array by opening its Array Management window, and then navigating to the remote replication group, and using the “Complete replicated pair” link.

On the remote storage array navigate to remote replication group and then select Complete replicated pair to complete the creation of remote replicated pair on both storages.

In the Complete Remote Replicated Pair window select Automatically create a secondary virtual disk and repository recommended and mention the virtual disk name which is part of the replicated pair and then click Finish to complete the creation of remote replicated pair between the local and remote
storage array virtual disks.

Then wait for the initialization to happen for the remote replicated pair created on the remote storage array. The initial full synchronization occurs between the local storage array and the remote storage array when the replicated pair is created and the consecutive point-in-time images at regular intervals.
