How do I cable my EqualLogic storage array?

Solution:

In this article we will discuss how to cable one EqualLogic array to a cluster environment. The examples below will illustrate an iSCSI SAN-attached to a two node cluster.

NOTE Use a CAT5e or CAT6 LAN cable with RJ-45 connectors to connect a Gigabit iSCSI port (server or array) to a Gigabit switch. Use a twinax or multi-mode optical cable with LC connector to connect a 10 Gigabit iSCSI port (server or array) to a 10 Gigabit switch.

 1. Connect cluster node 1 to the iSCSI switches.
          a. Connect a network cable from iSCSI NIC 0 (or NIC port 0) to the network switch  0 (sw0). 
          b. Connect a network cable from iSCSI NIC 1 (or NIC port 1) to the network switch 1 (sw1).

2. Repeat step 1 for each cluster node.
3. Connect the first Dell EqualLogic PS Series storage array to the iSCSI switches.

For Dell EqualLogic PS4000/PS6010/PS6510 storage arrays:

NOTE: See Figure 1, Figure 2, and Figure 3 as applicable.

  a. Connect a network cable from the network switch 0 (sw0) to Ethernet 0 on the control module 1. 
  b. Connect a network cable from the network switch 0 (sw0) to Ethernet 0 on the control module 0. 
  c. Connect a network cable from the network switch 1 (sw1) to Ethernet 1 on the control module 1. 
  d. Connect a network cable from the network switch 1 (sw1) to Ethernet 1 on the control module 0.

For Dell EqualLogic PS5000/PS5500 storage arrays:

NOTE See Figure 4 and Figure 5 as applicable.

  a. Connect a network cable from the network switch 0 (sw0) to Ethernet 0 on the control module 1. 
  b. Connect a network cable from the network switch 0 (sw0) to Ethernet 1 on the control module 1. 
  c. Connect a network cable from the network switch 1 (sw1) to Ethernet 2 on the control module 1. 
  d. Connect a network cable from the network switch 1 (sw1) to Ethernet 0 on the control module 0. 
  e. Connect a network cable from the network switch 1 (sw1) to Ethernet 1 on the control module 0. 
  f. Connect a network cable from the network switch 0 (sw0) to Ethernet 2 on the control module 0.

For Dell EqualLogic PS6000/PS6500 storage arrays:

NOTE See Figure 6 and Figure 7 as applicable.

 a. Connect a network cable from the network switch 0 (sw0) to Ethernet 0 on the control module 1. 
 b. Connect a network cable from the network switch 0 (sw0) to Ethernet 1 on the control module 1. 
 c. Connect a network cable from the network switch 1 (sw1) to Ethernet 2 on the control module 1. 
 d. Connect a network cable from the network switch 1 (sw1) to Ethernet 3 on the control module 1. 
 e. Connect a network cable from the network switch 1 (sw1) to Ethernet 0 on the control module 0. 
 f. Connect a network cable from the network switch 1 (sw1) to Ethernet 1 on the control module 0. 
 g. Connect a network cable from the network switch 0 (sw0) to Ethernet 2 on the control module 0. 
 h. Connect a network cable from the network switch 0 (sw0) to Ethernet 3 on the control module 0.

Connect the remaining Dell EqualLogic PS Series storage array(s) to the iSCSI switches by repeating step 3 for each additional storage array.
