Today we are excited to share with you world record SUSE Linux Enterprise Server performance in the SAP SD two-tier benchmark. The SAP SD two-tier workload has been developed by SAP and its partners to determine both hardware and database performance of SAP applications and components. The benchmark itself is a simulation of a SAP Sales & Distribution scenario. This simulation is carried out by multiple clients (companies) with users making orders concurrently for a sustained period of time with a predetermined set number of users. The metrics quoted by the benchmark are only considered successful when the host system exhibits the ability to sustain a maximum number of users working concurrently while delivering sub-second average response times. In the case of this discussion, we are specifically looking at the metric “number of benchmark users” as our measurement of throughput.

Here are a few features of the Intel Xeon E7-4800 v2 product family responsible for Dell PowerEdge performance improvements compared to the previous generation Intel Xeon E7-4800 series (codename Westmere-EX):

  • processor frequency – top bin processor frequency increase of 500 MHz
  • core count – top bin processor core count increase of 5 per processor
  • cache size – L3 cache increases from 30 MB to 37.5 MB per processor
  • increased memory frequency and capacity – memory frequency increase from DDR3-1333 to DDR3-1600
  • I/O bandwidth – QPI increase from 6.4GT/s to 8.0 GT/s
