Deploying Dell OpenManage Server Administrator on VMware ESXi Using Dell Online Depot and VMware Update Manager

Dell OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) is a software agent that provides a comprehensive, one-to-one systems management solution. OMSA is designed for system administrators to manage server systems remotely on a network.

A software depot in VMware ESXi context is used to package and distribute VIBs (vSphere Installation Bundles). There are two types of depots – online and offline depots. An online software depot is accessed remotely using HTTP. An offline software depot is downloaded and accessed locally. Dell hosts an Online depot for the end users to make it easier to deploy OMSA on VMware ESXi. Dell maintain the latest revision of OMSA images specific for VMware ESXi hypervisor at this depot. The depot contains multiple revisions of OMSA bits compatible for VMware ESXi 4.x and 5.x branches. This can be utilized by VMware Update Manager (VUM) for installing OMSA software on VMware ESXi hosts.

The white paper posted at Dell Tech Center provides detailed instructions on installing OMSA on VMware ESXi using Dell Online depot and VUM.

  • So is this still valid? I can't seem to get the Dell URL, vmwaredepot.dell.com/index.xml , to work in VMware Update Manager. I also tried the HP depot URL, vibsdepot.hp.com/index.xml , and it works fine. I'm also able to download updates from VMware fine, so I don't think it's an issue with my system.

Is the vmwaredepot.dell.com/index.xml still the correct URL for this?

  • vmwaredepot.dell.com/index.xml is the valid URL for Dell online depot. Please provide vmware-vum-server-log4cpp log file from c:\programdata\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Logs folder. This might have some details on why the URL is not getting added. Also if you can provide the screenshot of the failure while trying to add this URL, it would be helpful.

  • I'm having issues using this URL as well.  vSphere 5.1 Update 1.  vCenter server can get out onto internet fine. Getting error:

"Incompatible repository. Provide a repository from Vmware vSphere Update Manager Download Service 5.1.0"

    And the log file shows:

  • Sorry, kept getting an error when I tried to leave a comment, guess they went through afterall.

  • Sorry again, I see my error, I did not add the repo correctly, now I'm able to connect.

  • Hello, Thanks for clarifying. Let us know if you face any more issues while using depot.

  • Using Vmware Update Manager with a Download Source of vmwaredepot.dell.com/index.xml was working up until last month. Now when I download patch definitions I receive the error "Cannot download patch definitions." Turning off this source and it completes successfully.

I know nothing about these XML files, however think there is a problem with the index.xml file.  Viewing the XML file in a browser, this is what I get:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

    Dell, Inc.

    <code>DEL</code>

    DEL-index.xml

    DEL

It appears that  is missing. As such, there is no "DEL-index.xml" file in the root of this folder.

    Please help???

Reviewing the vmware-vum-server-log4cpp.log file, I see the following error:

[2014-12-19 13:18:26:682 'VciSigUpdateTask.SigUpdateTask{4698}' 8596 ERROR]  [vciSigUpdateTask, 723] Download 4.x host update: \n\nError downloading third party patches from :vmwaredepot.dell.com/index.xml: Error: Bulletin: Dell_OpenManage_ESXi410_OM740 with same name but different set of vibs already exists inside VUM. Re-importing in this scenario is not supported.

How can I fix this? Thanks!
