There are several ways to monitor Dell PowerEdge RAID controller(PERC) health status in VMware ESXi. VMware provides a section for storage in the Hardware Health Status page via vCenter server. However from VMware ESXi 5.0 onwards, the health status of PERC is not available by default. The reason is the LSI CIM Provider which provides the health status information is not available by default in VMware ESXi.
From VMware ESXi 5.0 onwards, the default storage health status page will have only harddrive information as shown below. It neither lists the health status of the RAID controller used nor the VDs created on it.
NOTE: Dell Customized VMware ESXi image also does NOT provide OR support this CIM provider, but it is available to be used at your risk.
To make VMware ESXi capable of listing the health status of information for PERC, perform the below steps.
3. Install the CIM provider on VMware ESXi using esxcli command ( for ex: esxcli software vib install –d VMW-ESX-5.0.0-lsiprovider-500.04.V0.38-0006-offline_bundle-1154845.zip ) OR any other supported methods available.
After the CIM Provider is installed, the hardware health status page shows the health information of PERC controller and the VDs created on it as below.
Currently the LSI CIM Provider provides only monitoring capability for PERC. For both monitoring and managing PERC on VMware ESXi, Dell recommends to use OpenManage Server Administrator(OMSA) available for download from Dell support.
Contact LSI for all the questions and/or issues related to this CIM provider. Refer to VMware KB for more details.
