Over the past couple of days, I’ve learned a lot about our Dell Desktop Virtualization Solutions (DVS) offerings. Today, I had the chance to chat with Rafael Colorado, Dell Director Marketing Desktop Virtualization Solutions. Rafael also gave a great Breakout Session here at VMworld (#SPO3920).

Let me briefly recap where we’re heading with our DVS solutions: For Dell, it’s a logical next step as one of the world’s leading end-user computing devices: It’s our customers who approach us facing an increasing demand to optimize management of their desktops. In response to that demand, Dell is offering a broad bandwith of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solutions, ranging from preconfigured and pretested Integrated Solution Stack (ISS) and Virtual Desktop as a Service, to custom-made solutions and vertical-specific offerings, like Dell Mobile Clinical Computing (MCC).
MCC is actually one of the most thrilling offerings we presented at VMworld. What are its key benefits? Just imagine a doctor on his daily rounds visiting patients. As he moves around the building, he needs access to patient records and applications. Here’s where Dell comes into play: A secured, kiosk-type machine provides access to his virtual desktop, which is hosted in the data center. This is a major improvement in efficiency and security, as compared to the traditional model where patient records are stored on various individual local devices, like a laptop. (What if the laptop leaves the hospital and gets lost on the doctor’s way to a conference?)
As the doctor moves from one patient to another, he is automatically logged off that particular station. If, for example, a nurse needs to log in to exactly the same access point later, she will be presented her own virtual machine. MCC is an amazing solution, given the fact Dell is transitioning from hardware-centric to a more solutions-oriented aproach. Now, we’re able to provide a complete, proven solution — including hardware, software and services — in a highly complex and (from a regulatory standpoint) very demanding sector. On top of that, Dell Mobile Clinical Computing is certified by our solutions partner, VMware.
While I’m writing these lines, it’s 4:35 pm here in Copenhagen. It’s time to say goodbye to my Dell teammates who are preparing to leave. It was a great show, I’m happy I had the opportunity to get a very close look at our solutions, and to talk with experts who have architected and tested them. And I’m looking forward to following-up with further blogs and Wikis to provide you with more in-depth information.
The Dell Storage crew was at VMworld Copenhagen last week. I would have done my normal live blogging
