MD3000i can't reset to factory defaults

  • I inherited a MD3000i and am trying to simply reset it to factory defaults.  There are two RAID modules (though only one seems active with IP address) and NO disks.

I've tried using the SMcli command but get a Error 101 - The operation cannot complete because either there is a problem communicating with any of the physical disks in the storage array or there are currently no physical disks connected.

I've tried using the serial connection to the active controller and break the boot sequence, when I enter 10 and hit enter for "Serial Interface Mode Menu", but it doesn't take me to the next option to enter 1 for "Console Only" it says Reset, Power-Up diagnostics - loop 1 of 1?  Thus I never get to a screen where I can do the syswipezero command?

Below is the "ALL" configuration tab from MDSM

  • Hello xetremex,

What you need to do is to insert 2 drive into slot 0 & 1 as you can’t wipe a system without having at least 2 drives in it. Once you have the drives in slots 0&1 then I would run the SMCLI command and it should be able to destroy all the disk groups & virtual disk.

The MD3000i is not able to confirm the configuration on the controllers and is looking for the drives to see if they match. Since there are no drives then the controller has nothing to check the configuration against. Also when you are doing a first time install as well as resetting the MD3000i the configuration is copied from the controllers to the drives.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Were you able to get this problem solved?

I'm having the exact same issue now in a used unit my company purchased from eBay.

  • Yes, buy using two compatible disk in the MD unit, I was able run commands to reset the array
