  • There is no away mode driver for Windows 7 64bit.  You can however install a null driver instead.  Copy the following and name fhe file awaymode.inf, then go to device driver and update the driver using this driver.  This is what I did when I installed Windows 7 64bit on my Inspiron 531.

  • Thanks for your help. I got Windows to install the file fine. Also got the system to go into sleep mode and back to my log in without a blue screen.

I'm a little lost though... This is a null file... so it really doesn't do anything really right? Just giving Windows a empty driver that doesn't affect anything?

Really wish Dell would come out with an away mode driver for Windows 7 64bit.

    Thanks again,

    Evan

  • Away Mode was really designed to be used with Windows XP Media Center Edition.  It basically replaced standby mode and put the computer to sleep, except it was still actually running.  This feature is not needed in Windows 7 and this driver just disables the hardware component that is still part of the Inspiron 531 computer.

  • This worked on my Dell XPS410 when I upgrade to WIndows 7 Pro 64Bt.  Red or yellow event logs and missing unknown driver flags drive me crazy.  Thanks for posting this I have a "clean" install, nothing in the way of reds, yellows or unknows for me to pick at. Smile

    thanks again.

  • You are very welcome.  Glad to hear you got your PC the way you like it.

  • That was incredible.

I also took the opportunity to rename the driver properties to something a little more creative than the one that was intended. Big Smile

    Thanks again!

  • Mint fix, thx

  • Thank you for this post, but it does not work here (Inspiron 531 with Win7 Home Premium).

I must have done something wrong.

    So, I copy the file...

    And than... I do what?

    Please help me through this?

Do I need to copy the file to the Windows INF-folder?

    Bert

  • Copy the file into notepad and save it as awaymode.inf to the desktop or any folder.  The go to device manager and update the driver for the device in question (exclamation mark) and point the update to the awaymode.inf file.

  • There is no 'official' 64-bit driver. However, you download this:

    http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats?c=us&s=bsd&cs=04&l=en&DriverId=R151573

It's for Vista and XP 32-bit. If you run it, it extracts to C:\dell\drivers\R151573. Then you open device manager, and update that unknown driver and choose the specific location of C:\dell\drivers\R151573\AmdAway and it will install the driver without issue.

Just make sure you do the update from specific location, because if you try to run the AMD Away Mode installer from it's extracted location, it will fail due to OS non-validation.

  • Thanks, Jason!! That Dell driver did the trick for my Dell Inspiron 531 (Windows 7 64 bit) installation.
