Dell 8400 SATA driver issue +Windows Repair

Not Answered This question is not answered

Long story short I need to do a Windows repair. I cannot access Window's or even safemode...all of my files are there. All of this was due to a trojan...anyways. When I try to do my repair when it gets to saving your configuration Windows will now reboot. After the reboot it blue screens.

I have ran into an issue where I cannot install or find the correct drivers for this pc. The ones I tried have either been too large to fit on a floppy, or gave me a txtsetup.oem error.  I can now at least see the SATA HD due to changing the bios setup. In short this small issue is driving me nuts. I have a pretty good knowledge of PC's...sadly I am a tech (A+)    :(   The irony is sickening.

The only way I can boot, is by using UBCD4WIN...thus I know my files are there which is nice...can someone please point me in the correct direction???   I figured why not post this here. I am out of idea's.

  • Its a common problem with Dim 8400. what you can do is enter into BIOS and expand drives and goto sata operation and change it to RAID AUTO/ATA. Now restart the system and check. If not please mention the exact error message.

  • Can someone please link me to the correct drivers, thats what I was asking. I just need to know which are the correct drivers, and I needed someone who has found resolution to send me a link. I think I may have used the incorrect driver. I'm not sure but this could be a posibility.

Can someone please verify if this is correct? I'm leaning toward the last one, I'm not sure which of these I have tried, there are other drivers on the page that deals with this model. Many of them are too large for a floppy. This is why I asked the question in the first place.

  • when you use xp sp2 or sp3 there is no need for xtra drivers for your sata controller. Its in built in xp it self. Go to bios and change the sata operation under Drives to RAID AUTO/ATA and it should resolve your problem in reinstalling.

For how to reinstall using cd you can visit the following site which gives screen by screen instruction. Computerhelp

  • That has not nor will it work, have you even read my question the drivers are not included on the XP SP 2 cd, the bios settings are no use either. I have been down that route. I am asking for someone to tell which driver is correct or can they please show me which driver I need. I even posted links all I ask is for someone to take a few seconds of their time and answer my small question. Also when i do attempt to repair XP I get a BSOD right after it reboots, the error is 0x8070184A.

Also when I tried to use one of the drivers I got from Dell I received an txtsetup.oem missing? How can I fix this? Can someone please help me. I am at my wits end. karthik_tkv1980 please do not reply any further.

  • Have you tried this driver?

Look in the installation instructions for how to put it on a floppy disc and use it in the reinstall.

Actually, changing the BIOS to use SATA as IDE is the simplest way around this

  • I'm not sure if i tried this one, it's been a week since I even attempted to tackle this again. But I will try this and see how it goes. SATA as IDE? I have tried every congi none work, the ones that seem to BSOD upon rebooting the machine in question. I'll let you know.

EDIT: I used this driver before and it (the XP repair) did it's thing copying files to the drive...after pressing F6 I selected the RAID driver, earlier I set the bios to the setting you mentioned (RAID Autodetect/ATA),  it copied the files, when it rebooted it blue screened again. I guess it's not the driver or maybe something else is wrong...I'm running out of ideas, most of the posts that deal with this are incomplete,, contain the wrong info or the person claims they fixed the problem but never expanded on that any further. I am feeling pretty down about now. I just need a ray of hope. Thats all, anymore input would be great.  :/

  • You mention that a Trojan started this whole thing, so your registry is probably pretty fouled up.  This means that a repair install most likely won't do much for you because only minimal registry changes are made during that action.  This is why your applications normally still work following it.  Since much of the stuff that makes a Trojan work is in the registry it is treated like an application.  If you could still boot I would suggest you take it to the malware forum where the experts could give you some assistance.

What I would do in this case is procure a second drive, install Windows, and when done, mount the problem drive as a slave so that you can retrieve your data.  The drivers for the Dimension 8400 are here:  Dimension 8400 Drivers.  You may note that the SATA driver given by simpswr is the second one in the SATA list.  The larger one is the matrix storage driver that gets installed after you have Windows up and running.  If you don't wish to mess with SATA drivers, you can alter the BIOS to RAID Autodetect/ATA to emulate an IDE controller.  Part of the trouble you are having is that your current installation was most likely installed using the AHCI interface.  Without performing some extra work you can't just change the BIOS setting for the SATA controller as Windows installs only the drivers it requires; if you installed using AHCI, that is the driver set you have, and it won't work with the IDE emulation.

    Good luck to you!

  • I removed all instances of the malware. I used UBCD4WIN to do so it took a few hours of scanning and a few minutes of removing keys, that was the first thing I did. It was also the most obvious. The driver that you guys mentioned didn't do anything except blue screen upon reboot! You maybe onto something about the registry being messed up. Perhaps even though I removed the instances something was changed, the only way to know is try a fresh install of windows. Right? Whats the worse that can happen at this point? I'm out of idea's, no one seems to have any input but yourself, I appreciate you taking the time to reply, a lot of the users here didn't even bother to read what I wrote. Funny thing is that the bios tells me the default setting is none other than RAID Autodetect /AHCI

I was wondering if a clean install would work? I guess I need to begin backing up stuff...just to find out. Sadly I left my external home, the Pc in question is @ my fiances, parents house....but you may be onto something.

  • One thing I forgot to mention is that you need to install two drivers first and in this order; the Dell Desktop System Software (found in System Utilities) and the Intel Chipset Driver.  The remainder are not so critical, but Dell suggests the next drivers installed be the video adapter, network interface, sound, and modem (if present).  Again, good luck!

  • You said " Funny thing is that the bios tells me the default setting is none other than RAID Autodetect /AHCI"

You want to set it as ATA or IDE . . not AHCI

Edit: . . what version is your BIOS . . you may need to update it to make the changes you need to.

  • Well after some messing around I've gotten no closer to a fix...also for good measure I tried the drivers again, the outcome was the same.

And with the default setting on RAID Autodectect/AHCI, I can't even see the HD, so i had to change it. I'm currently using UBCD4WIN to fill up my 8 GB usb key...the HD is about 300 GB (sigh), too bad I left my external burner home, though I don't know if it would of worked anyways. I'm taking my time monitoring this thread just in case someone can save the day, since this backing up is really slow...arghhhh.

This is one pickle of an issue.
