Vista Installation Problem - disk.sys (blue screen of death)

  • Hi all,
     
    I am constantly getting the following "blue screen of death" after the first 'reboot' from the Visa Home Premium (clean install). It takes a while after the BIOS notification, I see the microsoft corporate loading, and then finally (probably just as a graphic login area comes on), I get the below.

    I have:
    • DELL dimension 400/9150
    • 1 GB ram
    • 250 GB (Maxtor 7V250F0).
    • I have tried to upgrade every driver I have. I am on BIOS version A07
    • Radeon X600 256MB HyperMemory
    • Upgrade advisors (DELL, Microsoft) seem to indicate I should be fine!
  • Try booting from the vista disc there should be a repair option that may help you. You may have to boot from it more than once and try to repair it. Don't know if it will help, but it is worth a try.

    Unfortunately, it got to the point that 'Microsoft could not solve this problem automatically' and I sent information off to them  to 'help them solve the problem'
     
    It was whinging that the system volume on the disk was corrupt. Can anyone get anything from  below? Any other suggestions?

  • Hmm, I'm sorry I can't tell you what that means. The only other thing I can think of is trying a windows repair install. But if your disk is actually faulty no amount of installing will help. I am not really much of an expert on these things so maybe someone more knowledgeable can help you out on this cause I'm out of ideas, but would like to hear the outcome of this. Good luck.

  • Try this,
    Put your disk in, restart, <f12>, boot from DVD rom, <enter>, do not enter your product code, select the proper disk you bought, accept the EULA, and when the screen appears asking where you want to install windows, highlight your primary partition and select delete. Vista should wipe the disk clean, quick format, then install  on the raw partition,  should install in about 20 minutes.

  • Thanks for the suggestion. Will try tonight. However its an upgrade disk so not sure if your suggestion will work gdwrnch3?
     
    Update since my last post. I deleted the 2nd partition (thinking it might have something to do with it - though scandisk never found any problems). In the process, this blitzed my primary partition so I reformatted the hard disk, re-installed XP (no problems), and straight away installed vista (with no 3rd party software installed) with a clean installation.
     
    I went further along then ... but got win32.sys error (blue screen of death). I rebooted, but got back to the original error message in my first post.
     
    Could it be a RAM issue which Vista is extra sensitive about? XP has no problems with it, memory diagnostics came back clean.

    Tried the above suggestion. Let Vista installation delete primary partition and reformat, etc.
     
    Unfortunately, I still get the blue screen of death again around part 2 of the installation. The other thing I noticed was that the installation took much much longer than the suggested 20 minutes. It was over 2 hours before I get the error.
     
    Any further suggestions??? Other than giving up on Vista? :)

  • thats the best I can offer, all my installs took no more than 25 minutes, with the raid 0 install on my XPS 700 about 15 minutes. Sorry I couldn't help you.

  • I've been fighting the same problem during the past three days! I've searched some other forums, and I have concluded that a disk error is not the problem here. When I booted in safe mode during the first reboot of the upgrade, the last loaded file appears to be disk.sys... now, some guys over in the microsoft forums have suggested to update the BIOS, which I have already tried (didn't work). I think this problem is a BIOS/disk.sys driver conflict issue. Furthermore, I also run a Dimension 9150/XPS 400.

    I haven't been game to try it again until I've got further information. I've only just recently gone from 1GB of RAM to 2GB. I also have an external harddisk arriving soon so that I can do a 'better backup' prior to a re-attempt.
     
    I'm on A07 which according to DELL is the most up to date version of BIOS.
     
    Any suggestions on how to attack the BIOS/disk.sys issue? When I tried to login in via 'Safe Mode' in Vista I still got the blue screen of death email.
     
    You've been my best lead yet to someone else experiencing the same problem.

    Although I didn't get the exactly same BSOD message, You had a PAGE_FAULT... error, while I just got a HD drive error, requesting me to run CHKDSK /F (check disk; normal mode). The thing is, that our problems are the same: there's some kind of incompatibility issue between the HD and probably the BIOS. We also have the same system, a XPS 400 with a Maxtor drive. Although you have a different model, the drives use the same driver.
     
    My advice is to search (e.g. "disk.sys vista upgrade issue") other forums for potential work-arounds.
     
    I'll post back in later if I find something...

    I still think there's a conflict between the Dell A03/A07 BIOS and the Maxtor HD. I'm planning to buy another 160GB drive, this time NOT from Maxtor. I'll then try to install, not upgrade, on the new disk. Of course I have an upgrade version of Vista, so I will only be able to use it for 30 days... but I'll figure it out.:smileywink:
