Hi there! I got a lovely POWEREDGE 2900 coming up with an Single-bit ECC Errors due to the DIMM on the DELL UT571 SAS Controller.
Now I have been scouring the internet to find out if I can simply slap another DIMM into it and get it running or if the 256 meg DIMM (DDR2) stick has a certain coding to it that allows the RAID to function. I have already attempted to do so and the system could not find a boot drive. Where can I find a replacement RAID DIMM to activate the RAID controller since using Regular DDR2 RAM will not allow it to properly boot. P.S. This all started because the server sat around too long without being booted.
Doesn't appear that one will work. The RAID controller DIMM is very specific. Here is the information on the DIMM you need to find:
256MB DIMM, 200MHz, 32X72, 8K, 240, 1RX16 (PERC 5i) Part #: 6R829
Dell no longer has this in stock; you will have to find from a third party source, such as this:
Geoff PDell | Social Outreach Services - EnterpriseGet Support on Twitter @DellCaresProDownload the Dell Quick Resource Locator app today to access PowerEdge support content on your mobile device!(iOS, Android, Windows)
I don't know anything about that site.
Sorry for my links to the RAID battery earlier - I had been looking for a battery for someone else and copied those links instead :)
It would appear as if there are very few options for part numbers, everything pointing back to PN 6R829. Here are some reputable suppliers that have it:
"No way will I spend over that for one stick of DDR2 RAM from nearly 6 years ago... "
If you are prepared to retire this server then, I suppose that is up to you.
No, RAID controllers are very picky about its cache memory - it requires specific layout, size, speed, and timings. RAID memory will work as system memory, but system memory does not always work for RAID memory.
thank you for a quick reply. I began searching for a replacement RAM stick. I believe I have found one.
Would this RAID Ram work? It matches the specs of the RAID Ram stick from my controller w/ 256 MB PC2-3200-333.
Please let me know :)
"RAID controllers are very picky about its cache memory"
As Flash stated, cache memory is very picky, I would go as far as to state it is extremely picky. I would not even think of using anything but the recommended part. You may get a substuted part to appear to work, but an hour, a day or three weeks down the road you end up with issues, sometimes big issues.
Unsure if this is a truly trusted site, but I have found the exact same ECC RAM. Been finding a rediculous price on them though... around $70-80. On this website I gave them an offer of $20. No way will I spend over that for one stick of DDR2 RAM from nearly 6 years ago...

haha it's not my decision sadly. My boss is looking into getting a beefy workstation instead of this since one of the CPU's died earlier.... I looked up the price on that and it was 69 dollars and on top of this issue it'll be around roughly 150 dollars. We didn't pay for the server so it's all good. Just I would love to fix it up myself. Oh well... thanks for the help anyways guys. :)
