Broadcom NetExtreme II 5708C on PE2900 III

  • I recently install Window 2003 server on PE2900, and had difficulty installing

drivers for Broadcom NIC's. Once I finally go them installed and working, I set up a static

ip for one of the adapters, and disabled the 2nd adapter. When I do a ipconfig I see my settings,

but when you look at the TCP/IP properties, it shows that it is dynamic. I've read where this may be an

issue with the broadcom driver, but haven't been able to find any more details. Please help.

  • The BCOM driver is not installed correctly. Typically this occurs when the BCOM driver was added manually using device manager and the .inf file. The Broadcom drivers need to be installed using the Windows update package available on the Dell website or by running setup.exe from the BCOM hard drive version.

To try to resolve the issue, first uninstall anything Broadcom related from "Add and Remove Programs". Then reboot and remove the Broadcom driver from Device Manager. Reinstall the driver using the Broadcom Hard Drive package by running setup.exe from the extracted files.

Network: Broadcom NetXtreme Family of Adapters, NetXtreme II Family of Adapters, Driver, Windows Server 2003, English, Multi System, v.12.0, A00

If the issue is still unresolved then I would suggest a reinstall of the OS if possible.

  • I ended up reinstalling the OS using the supplied Dell system manger CD, it installed all the

required drivers. I must have tried to uninstall/reinstall 10 times, before I gave up.

  • Its probably too late, but heres the fix for that static ip problem:

DSA installs DO NOT have this problem, only manual installs of the OS

Steps for correcting the Broadcom issue:

    •
      1. Uninstall Windows Server 2003 Scalable Network Pack (SNP) KB912222 (if exists)
      2. Uninstall Driver and reboot.  Click cancel when the detected hardware window comes up.
      3. Reload Dell driver via Setup.exe in latest driver pack.
      4. Click Start > Run > Regedit
      5. Delete:
        HKLM\System\CurrentContolSet\Services\Winsock
        HKLM\CurrentContol Set\Services\Winsock2
      6. Open %winroot%\inf\nettcpip.inf in Notepad
      7. Edit [MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall] section as follows:
        Characteristics = 0x80
      8. Save edits
      9. Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties > General > Install > Protocol > Add > Select “Have Disk” > C:\Windows\Inf > OK > TCP/IP > OK

Note: You should be at the Local Area Connection Properties screen at this point. The Uninstall button should also be available now.
      10.  Reboot
      11.  Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties > General > Install > Protocol > Add > Select Network Protocols > Have Disk > C:\Windows\Inf > TCP/IP > OK
      12.  Reboot
      13.  Reload SNP

Worked for all the servers I have that wouldnt hold the static since I didnt use the Dell install assistance discs.
